Ningbo Port allowed entry of Chilean apples

General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) recently announced that China has restored apple imports from Chile after a previous suspension. Ningbo Port has been approved to import apples form Chile.

As the demand for healthy diet continues to increase in recent years, the consumption of fruit is growing in Ningbo. With an increasing annual import volume, the fruit import of Ningbo Port topped a record of 10,000 tons in 2013. The efficient customs clearance lowers the cost for fruit import, making locally imported fruits enter local market at lower prices than those imported from other ports in China. As a result, more and local fruit wholesalers prefer to import fruits from Ningbo Port, which means better quality and better price for local consumers.

With its diverse climates and natural environment, Chile produces the largest variety of fresh fruits in the world. Chilean fruit are sold in more than 70 countries and regions. The top fruits exported by Chile are apple and grape, accounting for more than 60 percent of its total exports.

AQSIQ has raised its standard of inspection and quarantine requirements for Chilean apples. Exporters can get more information from local inspection and quarantine sectors.

Yinzhou starts agricultural waste treatment program

Yinzhou District has recently launched a farmland cleanup program in an effort to establish a long-term agricultural waste disposal and recycling system. Farmers are required to collect containers or packages of fertilizers and pesticides for proper treatment instead of abandoning them randomly in their field.

Untreated farm irrigation runoff containing pesticides and fertilizers flows directly to local rivers and cause water pollution. As, agricultural authorities in Yinzhou District started a pilot agricultural waste treatment program in June, 2011 by setting up eight collection stations in three rural townships to collect agricultural waste.

According to statistics from local agricultural sectors, from late October to the end of December in 2011, the eight pilot stations collected a total of 230 tons of agricultural waste, including 185 tons rice seedling throwers and 45 tons of pesticide containers and bags. About 95 percent of the collected waste were properly handled.

In order to eliminate white pollution of farmland and reduce the risk of water and soil  contamination and the damage to farmland ecosystems, Yinzhou District issued a document titled "Measures on Collections and Treatment of Agricultural Waste" this March. According to the document, townships and villages shall collect all agricultural waste for proper treatment.

Yinzhou District also plans to set up agricultural waste collection stations in all rural townships and neighborhoods.

Tea leaves picking starts

It is learned from Ningbo Forestry Bureau that as the weather becomes warmer, tea gardens in Beilun District, Yuyao County and Ninghai County have entered the peak period for tea leaves picking.

According to a person from the bureau, the spring tea in Ninghai County, Beilun District and Fenghua County is primarily green tea, while that in Yinzhou District and Yuyao County is mainly white tea.

"With the recent amiable weather, the tea plants in the mountain areas have budded, and the shoots are now about two centimeters long." said Lu Bingyou, the owner of a tea garden in Ninghai County. Generally speaking, when the tea plants face the southeast on the top of the mountain, they can receive more sunlight. That is why they may grow faster and bud earlier. According to Lu, due to the cold weather, the tea-picking period this year started from March 7, one week later than the last year. It is reported that the average price for the local new tea leaves is about 1000 yuan per jin (500 grams), remaining almost the same as in the same period of last year
