Customs statistics show Ningbo's coal import has surged to a historic record of 2.914 million tons in 59 batches in January and February, worth $ 256 million, up 60.9 percent, 11.3 percent, and 58.2 percent respectively year on year. The imported coal includes steam coal, bituminous coal and anthracite coal with bituminous coal accounting for about 80 percent of total imports. The major exporters are Indonesia and Australia, accounting for about 70 percent of total imports.
To meet the rapid growth in coal imports, Beilun Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has adopted a number of measures to facilitate coal imports. One move is to streamline the approval process and speed up the process of inspecting, sampling, testing, and issuing certification. The second move is to update their laboratory testing equipment and increase its staff number in an effort to guarantee the accuracy, authority, and impartiality of their test results. The authorities pledge to crack down on business fraud and spare no efforts to maintain the legitimate rights and interests of local importers. The third move is to optimize the inspection and supervision on imported coal. A 24-hour inspection has been operated for coal container vessels in Ningbo Port
