Ningbo kites flying at Varna Kite Festival

“The children here are very interested in Chinese culture and the city of Ningbo. I invite them to visit Ningbo and experience its cultural charm in person.” said Hu Jinwei,

a science teacher of Gulin Town Central Primary School in Haishu District, in Varna of Bulgaria over the phone on August 25.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Bulgaria, as well as the 20th anniversary of Ningbo and Varna becoming sister cities. Invited by Sofia Chinese Cultural Center and Varna Kite Festival Organizing Committee, on August 19, Hu Jinwei, a national kite referee, inheritor of Ningbo Kite Intangible Cultural Heritage, and science teacher of Gulin Town Central Primary School, embarked on a cultural exchange journey to Bulgaria with his team.

At the Varna Kite Festival, Hu Jinwei flew kites with Ningbo characteristics: large yellow croaker kites brought from China to Bulgaria by the teachers of Sofia Chinese Culture Center, and long string kites with a length of over 300 meters made by students of Gulin Town Central Primary School.

In the design of long string kites, Hu Jinwei cooperated with the students majoring in “visual communication design” in the School of Art and Design of Ningbo University of Finance and Economics to skillfully integrate the cute cartoon IP image of “Happy Ningbo”, the Drum Tower, rice dumplings and other elements of Ningbo into the kite design.

“What impressed me most during my trip to Bulgaria is the love towards Chinese culture among foreign friends. This makes me realize once again the importance of cultural promotion and exchange”, said Hu Jinwei. He has long been engaged in leading more people to experience the kite culture of China, and he hopes that more kite enthusiasts will join in the efforts in the future
