Poultry markets shut down amid H7N9 bird flu fears

All live markets in Ningbo's urban districts will be shut down by January 26 for cleaning and disinfection, according to a notice issued by the Municipal Government on January 24. Meanwhile, local heath authority has banned all live-poultry imports and the flying of pigeons in urban districts.
According to the notice, Haishu, Jiangdong, Jiangbei and Yinzhou districts will suspend the sales of live poultry and birds in all agricultural products markets, flower markets, and poultry wholesale markets by 0:00 on January 26. Markets managements are required to conduct overall cleaning and disinfection and collect remaining poultry for treatment to stop the virus from spreading. Ningbo will ban live poultry imports and suspend reporting and inspection of live poultry imports in its urban districts. Sales of live poultry in any street market are strictly banned. In the mean time, a close monitoring of H7N9 virus will be carried on in all farms, habitat for migratory birds, wild birds training places, zoos, and parks. Pigeon flying and performances in zoos and local scenic resorts are also suspended.
Meanwhile, trade authorities are required to take steps to guarantee food supply during the upcoming Spring Festival. Other counties and districts shall decide whether to suspend or close their live poultry markets in accordance with changes in the epidemic and take actions according to the notification the provincial health authority.
