Exhibition held to show the birth of a movie

How many stages does a movie go through before it meets the audience? Maybe clothing design, art props, filming sets? In fact, there are far more than those. On the evening of August 30, the themed exhibition “I Shoot Movies at the Cultural Museum” was started at the

Art Space of the Cultural Museum of Beilun District. It will be open to the public from the next day on.

A director’s stories with Beilun District

For this exhibition, the Cultural Museum invited Zhang Chi, a Ningbo born young director, as the artistic director to break down the creative process of a movie and present it one by one to the public, allowing the visitors to learn about the “birth of a movie”.

Currently, as an important film and television shooting base, Beilun District has actively launched special supporting policies to support the film and television cultural industry. “In May 2020, my movie ‘Memory Cage’ was filmed in a studio in Bodi Film and Television City, and some of the exterior scenes were also produced in Beilun District. As a science fiction film, it has a large number of glass curtain walls with sky mirrors, dynamic light rails crossing the skyline, and rich nightlife scenes, producing the science fiction vision I wanted”, said Zhang Chi.

Zhang Chi referred to this time as a “continuation of my story” with Beilun. He brought his latest short film series “Encountering a Little Cutie Every Day” to the exhibition to share his creative experience. It is understood that the theme exhibition will last for nearly a month and is divided into four major sections: theme set, video exhibition, director forum, and public education activities. A the Art Space, seven “antique” movie projectors from both domestic and international sources present a century long history of film. The diverse display of manuscripts, scripts and costumes  allows the audience to immerse themselves in all aspects of film production. The key area of the exhibition, with the theme of “fantasy tales”, is inspired by the movie “Dog Town”, which was shot on stage. It filters out all complex elements and uses simple props to create a unique area. It even breaks down the “surfaces” in the public view into “lines” and “points”, more concretely showcasing the creative process of the movie and what the setting has to offer.

Audience can realize their dream of making a movie

It is worth mentioning that during the exhibition, the audience can enter the set to fulfill their own film and television dreams, and have a film and television work directed and filmed by themselves.

According to Yin Xue, the curator of the exhibition, in the process of designing the theme set, the composing team had deep insight into Beilun District and extracted unique cultural symbols belonging to Beilun as the scene base, breaking the “fourth wall” and constructing a stage scene that can capture images. “Whether it is the lighthouse responsible for ship traffic management and collection of hydrological and meteorological data, or the sunken ship witnessed by the historical marine Silk Road trade, they all carry the rich and long cultural history of Beilun District.”

According to Yin Xue, besides film watching, the organizers will invite some of the main crew to Beilun on the afternoon of September 2 and September 9 respectively to communicate with the audience.

This event is open for free to the public and will continue until September 24
