Walking on the banks of the Congma River, tourists can see both the street and the river, and appreciate the traditional culture radiating from the ancient city walls.
The living block in traditional Chinese style built along the Congma River further amplifies the charm of the ancient town. Strolling here, one can not only see the old styles of Cicheng Ancient Town, but also the ordinary lives of the local people.
Standing at the foot of the city walls of the Eastern Gate in the block, one can expect a wonderful encounter with time and space.
Up on the Wangyue City Wall, which is about 7.1 meters high, one can have a panoramic view of both sides of the Congma River block. The paths paved with bluestone slabs are long and intricate, and the exquisite courtyards are arranged in a neat and orderly manner. The green bricks, black tiles, and black pillars are showcasing the gentle nature of the lower reach area of the Yangtze River.
Along the banks of the river, various traditional Chinese cultural exhibition halls and folk shops are equally eye-catching, including the “Cirong Hall”, which mainly displays Chinese intangible cultural heritage items, the “Birth of a Book” exhibition hall, which specializes in book making techniques, the exhibition hall for traditional nationally prominent products made in Ningbo, and the “sugar smashing store”, which specializes in showcasing the traditional Ningbo craftsmanship of making sugar.
The willows on the banks of the Congma River are swaying, and a young girl wearing a beige wide-brimmed hat walking along the bluestone road, are also part of the beautiful scenery in the eyes of tourists.
“During holidays, there are many tourists, and after nightfall, this place is even more bustling!” said a person in charge of the scenic area. Every time the lights are on, the city walls near the Great Eastern Gate become an excellent “curtain”, where a “light and shadow show” full of modern cultural creativity and technological atmosphere will be stagede.
Taking advantage of the show, the living block in traditional Chinese style along the Congma River has started a new chapter in the eveing tour of the ancient town, and the updated light and shadow paintings of the town have attracted more tourists to come for a visit.
Today, on this characteristic block covering an area of over 25,000 square meters, the integration of traditional culture and modern China style, and the collision of cultural services and modern commerce have added new colors to the revival of the ancient Cicheng Town.
With the Congma River living block as the intersection point, the “Lingshan Mountain and Cishui River Leisure Ecological Belt” extending northward and the “Yaojiang Historical and Cultural Corridor” extending southward, have combined to present the “new name card” of Jiangbei District as the “original place of the port and even the city” to the entire city.
On the banks of the Yaojiang River, the 21-kilometer “historical and cultural corridor” route extends all the way to the centenary Old Bund area.
Meanwhile, there are also many pleasant scenic areas on this route: the Raffles Business District, Ningbo Grand Theater, MIXC Commercial Complex, Yaojiang Waterfront Greenway, Ningbo Olympic Sports Center, Qianyang E-Business Town, etc. There are “new landmarks” of the city under construction, as well as natural scenery, and the thriving industries.
“Once a trading port during the Qing Dynasty, it is now a trendy popular destination and a place to promote traditional culture. Every time I come to the Old Bund of Ningbo, I have a different feeling”, said a Mr. Xin, a local citizen. The most attractive thing for him recently is the achievement exhibition of “Chinese paintings of different dynasties” held at Ningbo Art Museum. “This is my third time to visit this exhibition to experience the artistic changes under the changing dynasties”.
Near the living block, there are scattered characteristic historic spots such as the ancient town of Cicheng, the old southern urban area, the characteristic block of Minquan Road, and the Cihu Martyrs Cemetery.
As some special areas of the ancient town, they have different styles: some focus on night economy, and serve as new internet-famous sites by introducing catering and cuisine, cultural and creative products, and entertainment performance; some excavate their red genes, by activating and utilizing such red cultural resources as celebrity residences; and some advocate “the style of Song Dynasty”, which organically integrates ritual music, opera, ancient style interpretation, and intangible cultural heritage inheritance.
As is reported, since the start of the “high-quality route, characteristic block and highlight spot” building program, up to now, Jiangbei district has built 12 high-quality tourist routes, 12 characteristic blocks, and 60 highlight spot projects. With its functional positioning as “ an urban economic highland, a future district along the river, and an international cultural living room”, this creative and beautiful district on the north bank of the Yongjiang River is showcasing its profound heritage, vibrant vitality, and beautiful future to the world
