These Exhibitions in Ningbo Were Selected as the “Top Ten Fine Products” of the Province

On June 8th, the Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau announced the list of the 17th (2022) Top Ten Exhibition Projects of Museums in the Province. Ningbo Museum's “Confluence - Special Exhibition for the 1200th Anniversary of the Founding of Ningbo” and Zhou Yao Insect Museum's “One Butterfly and One World - Mr. Zhou Yao's Permanent Exhibition of Scientific Life and Insect World” were selected as the provincial “Top Ten Fine Works” of the year.

In addition, the “Yimu Ran Song-style Wood Culture Exhibition” jointly organized by Hangzhou Museum of Arts and Crafts and Ningbo Tianyige Museum (Baoguo Temple Museum of Ancient Architecture) was also selected into the list of top ten boutique projects.

An exhibition that expresses the most distinctive history of the city

On June 5, at the final evaluation promotion meeting held in Hangzhou, Zhang Liang, president of Ningbo Museum, introduced the characteristics of the “Confluence” exhibition to the judges.

Zhang Liang said that the exhibition lasted from December 2021 to April 2022, and was a planned commemorative special exhibition launched on the occasion of the 1,200th anniversary of the founding of Ningbo, which was hailed as the most distinctive exhibition to express Ningbo's urban history in recent years.

From the perspective of framework, the exhibition extracts the characteristics of the port city of “the convergence of rivers and seas and the benefit of the world” from Ningbo culture, and focuses on the concept of “convergence” to tell the integration and convergence of people, logistics, information and cultural flows in the thousand-year-old port city.

Since 1955, a large number of empirical materials obtained by urban archaeology in Ningbo in the past 70 years have become the main source of exhibits. The Southern Song Dynasty's Baoqing Four Ming Zhi pioneered the division of Fucheng into four “quadrants” of northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest, which constituted the logical structure of the exhibition. Zhang Liang said that today's audience needs to explore, relax and experience when entering the museum. In order to unify the form and content, the entire exhibition hall plan “applied” the map of Ningbo's old city, and the cultural heritage in the four quadrants was displayed in the four areas of the exhibition hall. The exhibition also focuses on the contrast between ancient and modern, through the comparison of ancient government offices and modern image maps, and the comparison of ancient place names and modern place names, “helping the audience to construct the coordinates of ancient information in today's cities, and use the identity of space to eliminate the mystery of history”.

In the exhibition, Ningbo Museum also jointly developed a model of ancient ships of the Tang and Song Dynasties with Wuhan University of Technology, reflecting the world-leading shipbuilding technology of Ningbo in the Tang and Song Dynasties. When introducing the Tianning Pagoda, the lengthy text description was replaced by an evolutionary animation, which enhanced the expression effect of the exhibition.

The permanent exhibition of Zhou Yao Insect Museum was selected as “Top Ten”
