It's Happening....

Imported seafood compensates for fishing moratorium

Recently, an enterprise in Zhoushan declared to the customs 229.2 tons of imported frozen squid. Ningbo Customs opened the green passage for the batch of frozen seafood and gave it priority upon arrival at the port, so as to ensure its timely sales in the aquatic product markets throughout the city.

From 12 o'clock of June 1, the East China Sea started its three-month overall moratorium. The local citizens, who are accustomed to the seafood, used to have a difficult time during the three months. However, in recent years, the aquatic product markets remain brisk even during the moratorium. Besides the usual species such as the hairtail and yellow croaker, the imported frozen squid, bonito and mackerel are on the market to compensate for the shortage of local seafood during the moratorium.

Statistics from Ningbo Customs show that in the first five months, the imported seafood via Ningbo Port reached 28,000 tons, up by 52.6% over the same period of 2013, with a total value of 300 million yuan, up by 2.4%. Taiwan and the US have become the major import sources and the imports grow dramatically, with the import volumes of 14,000 tons (an increase of 5.2 times) and 3469 tons (an increase of 5.4 times) respectively.
