Foreigner in Ningbo Gets 10 Years in Prison for Ivory Smuggling

By eChinacities.com

Wrongdoing foreigners have been all over the news this week. This time round, it’s Guinean citizen Barry Seydoux, who has been sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for the smuggling of endangered animal products. Seydoux’s personal assets of 300,000 RMB have also been confiscated by the police, as have all his other smuggled animal items. It was also reported that Seydoux has already been deported.

His collection included 1,226 pieces of ivory weighing nearly 60kg—an amount that was said to be worth around 2.5 million RMB. Also among the items were elephant skulls, hippo tusks, and products made from python and crocodile skin. All the items found were said to be made from endangered animals. Most of the items were said to have been smuggled in during the Shanghai Expo in 2010, with Seydoux transporting them under the guise of “African crafts” as he moved them from Guinea to China.

At the end of 2010, Seydoux attempted to smuggle a second batch of goods into China, though was caught by the Ningbo customs.
