Ningbo contributed 1/3 of deduction of emission of air pollutants in Zhejiang

According to Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Environment Protection, in 2012, Ningbo made a perfect fulfillment of the targets set by Zhejiang Provincial People's Government on the emission of major pollutants. According to the assessment office of Zhejiang, Ningbo reduced COD by 4.86%, ammonia nitrogen by 2.85%, sulfur dioxide by 5.23%, and nitrogen oxides by 5.43%.
The examination by the office shows that Ningbo contributed 30% of the total deduction of emission of air pollutants in Zhejiang, ranking No.1 in the province. The radical reduction of air pollution contributed positively to the improvement of the air environment. According to statistics from Ningbo Environmental Monitoring Center, in 2012 the annual average concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides reduced by 19.4% and 15.4% respectively.
Since 2012, in key projects, Ningbo has practiced a strict control in coal consumption and further carried out the clean energy strategy for new projects. Ningbo has made great breakthroughs in total coal consumption control and basically no approval has been given to projects with coal-fueled boilers. Meanwhile, Ningbo has made substantial progress in carrying out pollutant discharge in key projects and completed the denitrating program ahead of schedule. Ningbo has put into operation the desulfurization project of Ningbo Steel Plant, the 150,000-kw denitration program of Taiwan Plastics Thermal Power Plant, and the denitration program of Guohua Ninghai Power Plant. The 2nd phase project of the South Sewage Water Treatment Plant, a project with its daily capacity of 80,000 tons, was completed, which further reduced the waste water discharge.
While promoting pollutant discharge in key projects, Ningbo has sped up pollution treatment in the 10 major heavily polluting industries including electroplating, dyeing and chemical industries, which has notably reduced the pollution discharge in the industries. Statistics show that the city has completed the treatment of 65 lead and acid battery companies, closing down 58 of them. It has basically completed the treatment of all the 158 dyeing companies and 225 electroplating companies. 7 paper mills, including Tianming Paper, have been closed down.
In addition, Ningbo has strengthened the coordinated control mechanism for pollution control of the port-oriented industrial and chemical industrial areas, and practiced comprehensive control program for automobile exhaust emission and the program "No Highly Polluting Fuel Areas". At present, the city has eliminated and renovated 465 coal-fueled boilers in central urban areas, some automobile exhaust check stations have been completed and put into operation and the 4th stage national standard for automobile pollutant emission has been carried out.
