To mark the 89th anniversary of China's cartoon production, Ningbo Museum opens a Cartoon and Animation Art Exhibition lasting from July 25 to September 25. Meanwhile, a classic cartoon movie show was going on in its lecture hall.
Dating back to nearly 90 years ago, Chinese animated film industry has made remarkable achievements. The organizers of the exhibition has selected 48 classic animated film posters, together with 11 precious manuscripts and 60 movie stills, allowing the audience to pay homage to Chinese animation pioneers.
The animated film boasts a long history in China. In ancient time, Chinese produced shadow-picture lantern and shadow play, which inspired today's animation filmmakers. Animated film in the true sense started in the early 1920s, when Wan Laiming and Wan Guchan, also known as the Wan brothers, pioneered the Chinese animation industry and became China's first animators. They produced Princess Iron Fan, which became China's first animated feature film of notable length and the 4th worldwide. The exhibition in Ningbo Museum displays the patriotic cartoons produced by the Wan brothers during the anti-Japanese Aggression War (1937-1945). Another industry founder, Qian Jiajun, created a number of China's earliest and award-winning cartoons and made outstanding contributions to the animated film industry. In 1940, he completed his maiden animation "Happiness in Peasant Family," a black and white movie with soundtracks, and won wide accolade. In this exhibition, two of Qian's masterpieces, namely "Why are the crows black?" and "The Turnip" are on display.
Since July 18, Ningbo Museum has been offering free movie shows of 39 classic animations, which was hailed by the public. To date, it has received nearly 2,500 viewers, half of whom were teenagers

As the summer heats up, the overseas demand for air conditioners are growing strong again. Local manufactures begin to see the busiest season earlier than usual this year. According to latest statistics issued by Ningbo Customs, Ningbo has exported in the first half of this year 1.67 million air conditioners, worth of $ 320 million. The figure represents a year-on-year rise of 69.4 percent and 50.4 percent, respectively, hitting a record high over the same period. The export volume in April alone exceeded 40 million units, setting a monthly record.
The air conditioner exportation has seen rapid growth in both traditional and emerging overseas markets. In the first half year, Ningbo has export 300,000, 210,000 and 124,000 air conditioners to the United States, the European Union and Israel, its top three exporters. The figure means a year-on-year increase of 4.4 times, 29.2 percent and 14.3 times, respectively. The export volume to the three exporters contributed to 38 percent of the city's total export volume over the same period.
While the air conditioner export turnover is on the rise, the export prices keep falling. Shao BinBin, a local customs officer, said, "We handle air conditioner exportations nearly every day in recent months. Compared with previous years, air conditioning export volume rises significantly, but the price keeps declining. Most manufactures produce OEM products instead of their own brands." Customs statistics show, the average export price of Ningbo-made air-conditioners has fallen 6.7 percent year-on-year to $ 189 per unit in the first half of the year

The first orchid theme park in Zhejiang Province will be officially opened to visitors at the end of this July. The theme park, located at Xiaotang Township of Ningbo's Xiangshan County, will bring the world-renowned Taiwan orchids to the mainland.
Taiwan's high-quality agricultural products enjoy a high reputation among the mainland consumers, who do not have many chances to try them. Currently, Zhejiang and Taiwan provinces are establishing an economic and trade cooperation zone in Xiangshan County, which boasts favorable ecological environment and developed agricultural industry. The move aims to introduce the modern Taiwanese agricultural technology and management mechanisms to Ningbo and build the first high-quality agriculture development zone in Zhejiang Province.
The orchid theme park is a part of the cooperation project. In the 2000-square-meters glass greenhouse, one can find more than 100 species of rare orchids transplanted from Taiwan.
"The constant temperature in the glass greenhouses as well as the rich soil in Xiangshan permit necessary conditions for growing Taiwan orchids." said Lin Shijie, general manager of Taiwan Jinlan Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.. The company will soon build another glass greenhouse with an area of 5 mu (3333 square meters), where they plan to grow over 500 kinds of precious orchids. Meanwhile, they will also introduce the latest technology in orchid-growing to mainland growers.
"Our orchid theme park offers a range of shopping and dining services for the visitors. We have opened a Taiwan-style restaurant and a teahouse to offer our visitors opportunities to try Taiwan flavor," said Sun Songe, the local party chief.
Besides the orchid theme park, the township also built a "Taiwan Agricultural Park", which exhibits nearly 20 kinds of Taiwan-grown fruits like taro, dragon fruit, pear, lemon, grape, wax apple, mango, and citrus. "The agricultural park adopts the latest agricultural technologies and tending methods. It has a smart greenhouse which designs to regulate the temperature and humidity and create a growing environment similar to Taiwan. Agricultural cooperation with Taiwan has enabled us to develop more high-quality flowers, fruits and vegetables," said Lou Xin, head of Xiaotang Township.

Ningbo has been stepping up its forest action since the beginning of this year. In the first half of 2012, Ningbo has injected 1.63 billion yuan to its forestry sector, consisting of 600 million yuan and 660 million yuan to Yinzhou and Beilun districts respectively, who have successfully won the title of provincial Forest City last year.
Ningbo has completed 80,000 mu(5,333 hectares) of afforestation and reforestation in the first half year. The figure included a 73-km long (307 hectares in area) coastal forest belt, a 147 km-long fire-resistant forest belt, 8,000 mu (533 hectares) for valuable tree species, 30,000 mu(2,000 hectares) for forest tending project. Plain afforestation highlights the city's forestry sector this year. The actual afforestation has exceeded 4,7000 mu (3,133 hectares), surpassing the annual target of 45,000 mu (3,000hectares). Up to now, the city's plain forest coverage has amounted to nearly 18 percent, which means the city has completed the 2015 target set by the provincial government. To promote the plain afforestation, many precious species were introduced to villages and townships in Ningbo. Forestry authorities said they plan to plant 1.7 million rare species trees in 1,700 villages before the year of 2015. So far, they have given off 360,000 valuable trees for free and involved 430 villages in the afforestation projec
