Reading season for minors launched

Like a lighthouse, reading can illuminate children’s road of growth. In order to further deepen public reading, enrich the spiritual and cultural life of the minors,

and cultivate the patriotism of young people, on the afternoon of June 2, as one of the “Reading Classics with Children” public reading series activities, the 20th Ningbo Reading Season for the Minors was officially launched at the Yongfeng Hall of Ningbo Library.

It has been 19 years since the first reading season for the minors was held, and Ningbo Library has carried out nearly 5,000 diverse and meaningful reading promotion activities. Parents have accompanied their children through countless moments of reading classics, discussing problems, and sharing insights.

This year’s reading season for the minors revolves around the theme of “reading classics with children”, which will last from June to August. With the slogan of “reading classics for children to enjoy beauty of life”, it is divided into two major sections: “Classics Accompanying Childhood” and “Pursuing Dreams for a New Future”. In collaboration with Ningbo Public Library, over 300 activities have been launched, providing a platform for children to showcase themselves and learn from each other.

“As a practitioner and leader of nationwide reading, Ningbo Library has always been committed to providing rich reading resources and a high-quality reading environment for the general public.” said Xu Yibo, director of Ningbo Library, at the launching ceremony of the reading season. In 2023, the number of readers received by Ningbo Library increased by 81% year on year, and the number of books borrowed and returned increased by 35% throughout the year. As parents attach great importance to classic reading and parent-child reading, picture books, children’s books, and parent-child education books have become quite popular.

Reportedly, this year’s reading season for the minors will carry out a range of special activities, including “Seeing+” Children’s Creative Picture Book Competition, the “Happy Childhood” Creative Classic Picture Book Drama Performance Competition, and the Children’s Painting Competition for Ningbo’s Sister Cities. In addition, a series of reading activities with rich content and diverse forms will be held, including “please come and read the classics”, the summer humanistic reading plan, the “Classics Review” series of lectures, making it possible for children to meet great minds of the past and future selves in reading, feel different lives, and experience rich emotions.

It is worth noting that there has been a significant increase in participation in the main activities this year. For example, the Children’s Painting Competition for Ningbo’s Sister Cities received 1,015 works from 15 countries, and the “Happy Childhood” Creative Classic Picture Book Drama Performance Competition received 98 recommended works
