Plan on Shanghai-Ningbo Cross-sea Channel (the second channel of Hangzhou Bay Bridge) is recently approved by experts, which means study on the channel planning officially rolls out.

In the expert review meeting, expert review comments were provided. According to them, we should plan and consider in national road network, rail network level planning, strengthen traffic analysis and forecasting, demonstrate in-depth project plan, and promote and enhance our work.

It is reported that City Railway, Highway Bureau, Airports Relocation Headquarters, Transportation Department and other units also attended the meeting.

Study on planning is the most basic step to start the project where planning scheme will be formed. Hangzhou Bay Bridge is seen as first channel of Hangzhou Bay Bridge traffic. The study of second channel is designed to build another bridge between Ningbo and Shanghai.

The planned route starts from the south of Hangzhou Bay Bridge Terminal connecting Cixi, Ningbo, the northbound route goes across the mouth of Hangzhou Bay (via Ningbo, Jiaxing, Shanghai waters), land in Jinshan, Shanghai, joining Shenhai Highway. The entire route covers 66 km, of which about 54 km is by sea.

According to reports, different from the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the bridge will involve co-building inter-city railway, better use channel resources and develop integrated transport.

The planning and construction of Shanghai-Ningbo Cross-sea Channel (the second channel of Hangzhou Bay Bridge) is significant in the implementation of the strategy of national development of the Yangtze River economic zone and the coastal Silk Road, in the building and improvement of coastal traffic in the Yangtze River Delta region, in the enhancement of Ningbo’s presence in Shanghai and in the Yangtze River Delta, in the promotion of Shanghai to build an open, internet-based external transport network.
