Ningbo aims to build 200 rooms for moms and babies by the end of this year

Mrs Yang, a woman who has become a mother recently, is quite exhilarated for the work unit was now equipped with a mother-and-infant room. She, therefore, will be spared the effort of worrying about her milk. On March 3, Women’s Committee of Ningbo Federation of Trade Union has held a meeting, in which a crucial agenda was set to take all participants to visit this newly-built harbor located in the second floor of Ningbo Hefeng Garden Hotel.

At the corner of the corridor in the second floor of the hotel, a square-like space was set about less than 10 square meters. This is the mother-and-infant room Mrs Yang was talking about. It is equipped with long couches, tables and desks, crib, fridge and book shelves along with daily necessities a new mother might need. The space is not commodious but quite cozy by its setting.

Studies made by Women’s Committee of Ningbo Federation of Trade Union have revealed that the penetration of mother-and-infant rooms in enterprises and commercial buildings are so low that young mothers have become a generation of milking. That is to say, they have to milk themselves in their work units. They have to face the embarrassment and inconvenience milking has brought but also the health problems. Some of the women staff choose to abandon the way of breast feeding while some even resigned. To make the issue worse, there are few rooms in public places such as bus station, malls and hospitals for mothers to feed their babies by their milk. Young mothers often feel frustrated about it.

To solve the problem, Women’s Committee of Ningbo Federation of Trade Union has made mother-and-infant rooms into part of a series of activities called China Dream•Virtue of Labor - Caring about Women Staff and issued a Notification on Caring about Women Staff and Building 5•1 Mother-and-infant Rooms. Enterprises, public organs, economic parks, commercial building and public places with a number of women staff and mature conditions are required to build rooms for mothers and infants. It aims to use the room for multiple functions.

Up to now, 143 mother-and-infant rooms were built across the country, benefiting almost one thousand women staff in pregnancy and lactation period. The construction of mother-and-infant rooms as a public benefit program benefiting women staff was highly welcomed and praised in the actual operation. Ningbo Federation of Trade Union has listed it as one of the 10 practical programs of 2015 and set aside money to support its construction. It aims to build 200 in the city by the end of 2015.
