Elderly population up by 4.9%

According to the "“2012 Annual Ningbo Aging Development Statistics Bulletin" released by Ningbo Municipal Committee on Aging on May 29, in 2012 the city’s elderly population with an age of 60 and above (referring only to the residents) stands at 1.124 million, 19.4% of the total population, an increase of 4.9% over last year. The increase of the rate of aging population has become increasingly serious in Ningbo.

The bulletin shows that the number of senior citizens aged 80 years and above reaches 167,000, accounting for 14.9% of the total elderly population. The ratio of urban and rural elderly population is close to 1:2.

The first three administrative areas with highest aging rate are Zhenhai District, Yuyao County and Cixi County, with the proportion of the elderly population of the total population being 21.6%, 21.1% and 20.4% respectively. While the area with the lowest aging rate is Ninghai County, with the proportion being 16.3%.

 

There are now 183 centenarians in Ningbo, an increase of 13 people over last year. Among them, 44 are male, accounting for 24%, while 139 are female, accounting for 76%. There are 42 centenarians in Cixi County, ranking No.1 in the city. The bulletin includes a prediction of the future growth of the elderly population in Ningbo, and points out that the aging situation will become more severe in the following years. By the end of 2015, the elderly population will reach 1.28 million, accounting for about 22% of the total population.

The bulletin also shows that a number of major nursing home projects have been started, including: the Phase II project of Ningbo Social Welfare Institute, with a total investment of 220 million yuan and 1600 beds. Xiangshan Apartment for the Elderly, with a total investment of 230 million yuan, Guang’an Nursing Home in Haishu District, with a total investment of 116 million yuan, the Social Welfare Center in Jiangdong District, with a total investment of 112 million yuan, and the Service Center for the Elderly in Zhenhai District, with a total investment of 92 million yuan.
