Top 10 Touching News and People of Ningbo 2014 released

Ningbo – a city of love, has been bubbling with love in the past 2014. Top 10 Touching News and People of Ningbo 2014 co-organized by Ningbo Municipal Charity Federation, Ningbo Federation of Journalists and Ningbo Evening Newspaper was released recently.
The activity has been on for 11 years since 2004. Ningbo Municipal Charity Federation has received 71 pieces of works concerning touching news and people from November,20 to the end of December in 2014. All works have recorded typical news events and people with a sense of journalism, benevolence and morality during the past year.
Specifically speaking, five characteristics emerged in the activity of 2014: stories of ordinary people displayed touching charm, benevolent entrepreneurs cropped up; not a few benevolent projects were born; donation events were organized one after another, the first charity foundation was established by foreign nationals, marking a milestone in Ningbo’s charity history.

Alibaba Invests in Israel Startup for QR Codes Technology

Chinese online giant Alibaba is investing an unspecified amount of money in Israel-based tech startup called Visualead.

Visualead's technology focuses on developments in Quick Response codes, also known as QR codes.

The Israeli company is has been working with 500-thousand small and medium enterprises to develop QR codes embedded with specific images in them.

The investment comes as Alibaba moves to try to make it easier for users to access to its mobile platforms.

China Clamps on "Jihadi Migration" at SW Border

Violence in the name of "jihad" has emerged as a major threat along China's southwestern border, prompting a crack down on illegal immigration since last May, according to China's police authorities.

Just two days ago, Chinese police shot dead two illegal immigrants who attacked them with knives in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region that borders Vietnam.

Police found five illegal immigrants on Sunday in Pingxiang City, but they resisted capture. Two were shot dead and two others were apprehended at the scene. The other fled but was captured on Monday.

UN Worker Kidnapped in CAR by Anti-balaka Militants

A United Nations staff working in Bangui, capital of Central African Republic (CAR), was kidnapped near Bangui airport on Tuesday by Christian militants anti-balaka, sources said.

On Monday, the militants took two charity workers in Bangui, one is a 67 year-old French lady and the other one local. A source said the negotiation between the government and the anti-balaka is underway, but there is no result so far.

Another source told Xinhua that purpose of the kidnapping is speculated to be pressing the release of an anti-balaka leader who was arrested by the UN peacekeepers recently.

A civil war in CAR broke out on Dec. 10, 2012 between Seleka rebel coalition and government forces. Seleka took power from the then president Francois Bozize in March 2013 and the rebel's leader Michel Djotodia declared himself as president.

Elected provisional president by a National Transitional Council in April 2013, Djotodia was forced to quit power in January 2014 amid worsening violence between Christian anti-balaka group and Muslim Seleka. Catherine Samba-Panza was elected as provisional president by the National Transitional Council and remained in power since then.

"Firewall” in Gulou Historic Street totally updated

The fire fighting system in Gulou Historic Street has been completely updated after a year. 
As one of the landmarks of Ningbo, Gulou Historic Street has abundant wood-made buildings, stores and is a hot destination for travelers. The fire fighting system has long been under great pressure. The previous fire fighting system was installed in 1997. With the passage of time and the development of the street, the automatic alarming system has stopped working; the pipelines were too outdated; and there were not enough auxiliary equipments. Due to its great hidden risk, the street was listed as the black list of fire fighting system of 2014. 
An official from the Security Supervision Office of Gulou Street said the improvement this time includes the updating of fire fighting alarming system, spraying system and the repairing of smoke control system, fire resisting shutter and emergency lighting. Besides, the fire fighting system in each store has been connected to the automatic alarming system of the street. 
By the end of 2014, after the assessment of the third party, the fire fighting system in the Gulou Historic Street has been totally updated.
