Volunteers help with trash clean-up in parks

After the three-day May Day holiday, Ningbo's major tourist attractions received a total of 100,000 visitors, who also left tons of trash for the local custodial staff to clean up. The good news is a group of volunteers is initiating a trash pickup via microblogging and Wechat.

Mr. Zhang, the starter of the volunteer program, said that they wish to "help raise awareness of environmental protection among tourists" through their volunteer work. 

Tom, an international teacher working in Wanli University also joined the volunteer team. Having been working in China for one year, Tom has a hobby of cycling around Dongqianhu Lake in his spare time. Together with his Chinese friends, he helped picking up trash in the park.

Till last Sunday afternoon, trash left on both sides of the road around the lake had been cleaned up. Working staff have been working to tend the lawn trampled by visitors. According to Mr. Xin, a gardener in Dongqianhu Lake, some tourists had barbecue and picnic on the public lawn, leaving litter and trash. Besides, some bushes near curbs were crushed by tourists' cars. However, Xin expressed his gratitude to the volunteers who offer help in cleaning up trash. "I’d like to thank the volunteers. They helped us a lot," he said.

Ningbo air quality ranks No.4

It is learned from Ningbo Environmental Protection Bureau that for the first quarter of 2014, Ningbo ranks No.4 in Zhejiang Province, only next to Zhoushan, Lishui and Taizhou, in terms of the comprehensive index for environmental air quality and excellence rate of air quality. Of the 74 monitored key cities in China, Ningbo ranks among the top 25 in terms of air quality.

According to the monitoring statistics for eight state-owned automatic atmosphere monitoring stations from Ningbo Environmental Monitoring Center, the air quality in the first quarter this year is slightly better than that of last year in terms of the Air Quality Index (AQI). In the first quarter, the central urban area saw 16 days for excellent air, 49 days for good air and 24 days for polluted air. The proportion of good and above air quality stands at 73%, three percentage point higher than the same period last year. Tourists number hit record high during May Day holiday

Ningbo's major tourist attractions received a record number of tourists during the three-day May Day holiday, said local tourism authorities.

Ningbo’s Xiangshan County welcomed a total of 730,000 tourists by May 3, up 46 percent over last year's 500,000 tourists.

According to a director of Xiangshan County Tourism Bureau, major local tourism attractions like Songlanshan Moutain and Xiangshan Film ＆TV Studio launched various activities including bonfire parties, trade in & recycle fairs, and traditional costumes parades, attracting many tourists. Tourist number of Songlanshan Resort on May 2 grew by 198 percent year on year, with its ticket revenue growing by 322 percent. Shipu Fishing Port also saw a ticket revenue increase by 83 percent year on year. On may 1, the first day of the public holiday, Xiangshan Film ＆TV Studio saw a ticket revenue growth by 260 percent year on year. Besides, boat tours and fishing tours also attracted a large number of tourists. A total of 50 boat tours were organized for the tourists.

New edition of "Travel in Ningbo" issued

The latest edition of the App "Travel in Ningbo" was issued on April 30, boasting a new addition of the real-time bus inquiring system for Beilun District and the information for train tickets.

"Travel in Ningbo" is a mobile phone-based travel platform launched by Ningbo Commission of Transport, aiming at solving the problems met by citizens while traveling. It achieved the "Award for Innovative Products and Applications" at the CITE held in April 2014. The platform provides such functions as the real-time bus information in the urban area, information about nearby parking lots or public bicycle stations, inquiry of train tickets and purchase of coach tickets.

In the new edition, the information on the bus travel in Beilun district has been included, with all the 900 buses running in the district integrated into the system. By clicking the "real-time bus" sector, one can choose the bus line to get the information on the position of the current bus and the departure and arrival of the next bus.
