The most expensive shellfish products in the market are sea melon seeds. Wholesaler Xie Zili is a native of Cixi and has been in the melon seed business for more than 30 years. He said that the sea melon seeds are divided into nearly 10 prices from high to low according to their size, which is very different. The wholesale price of the largest and best sea melon seeds is 250 yuan per catty, and the smallest is only 10 yuan per catty.
“The sea melon seeds on the market in Ningbo are mostly produced in Wenzhou, and recently Cixi sea melon seeds have also been listed one after another.” Xie Zili said that in recent years, the production of sea melon seeds in tidal flats has been declining year by year, coupled with the rising cost of manual picking, which has led to the rising value of sea melon seeds. Xie Zili said that now retailers choose the most 40 yuan to 60 yuan per catty, and each time they take the goods, it is only a few catties, and when they go to the vegetable market, the retail price will almost double.
Cockles, clams, clams, meat snails, snails, scallops, etc. are all popular varieties in the market. Blood cockles are one of the representative shellfish in Ningbo, but Wang Zhuqian, a native of Ninghai, successfully sold it to the United States on the other side of the ocean. Wang Zhuqian has been engaged in the blood cockle business for more than 20 years and is quite famous in the circle. He said that this year he met a Fujian buyer, and now the other party orders a batch of more than 100 pounds of high-quality Fenghua blood cockles every four or five days, packages and shipped to Shanghai, and then airlifted from Pudong Airport to New York, United States.
The wholesale market deals in shellfish products from around 7 p.m. to around 12 p.m. every day.
