Wuling Ancient Street attracts tourists

The West Wuling Road, a 100-year ancient street of Xikou Town of Fenghua District, is usually referred to by the local people as the “Three-Mile Long Street”.

Stepping on the flagstone road and following the Shanxi River separated by a fence, one can see this most bustling ancient street of Xikou Town.

The ancient street has an area of approximately 16,000 square meters, with over 40 stores. Along the street, there are many old buildings, such as Wushan Temple, Wuling School, a western-style mansion, and the Wenchang Pavilion. They are like pearls on the old street, presenting a unique charm of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Passing through the Wuling Gate, one cannot miss the black-brick arch of a small western-style house on the right of the road. It is a coffee shop in the old-fashioned building, with old photos hanging on the Morandi-colored wall gallery, where one can send a specially made postcard to a friend, to add to a nostalgic feeling.

During the Mid-autumn Festival and the National Day holiday, the opera stage of the  Wushan Temple staged two Yue Opera performances every day, attracting many tourists to stop and enjoy. According to “Bamboo”, owner of the Mubai Crafts Shop, as tourists enjoyed the soft singing style, the performance was very popular. Due to the gathering effect of the Yue Opera, her milk tea was also very popular during this period, with the average sales of 500 cups per day.

After listening to a piece of the performance, a tourist can walk for about one minute to visit the Wuling School. This is one of the top ten ancient buildings in Zhejiang Province and also a location for many film scenes. The exquisite Manchurian windows, vermilion window sills, and green tiles and eaves all demonstrate the style of the Republic of China period.

The Cheongsam Experience Hall is a must for the immersive experience of the traditional style. Choosing a favorite cheongsam and taking a set of ambient photos of the Republic of China period is a way for many families to commemorate their travels. Gong Hangyu, the manager of the Red-gang Tailor Fashion Industrial Park at Wuling Xiangdai Palace Museum, said that in recent days, the passenger flow has been relatively high, with customers coming from all over the country.

The thousand-layer pancakes are definitely the most traditional pastry of Xikou Town. On the street, there are rows of pastry shops of all sizes, and the air is filled with the unique salty aroma of the pancakes. With a combination of ice cream, this kind of cake has developed a new way of eating this summer.

“I created my own thousand-layer pancake ice cream, but I have never expected it to be so popular.” said Jiang Xiayi, a daughter of Jiang Dingjun, the inheritor of the thousand-layer pancake making skills, a Ningbo’s intangible cultural heritage item. For example, some customers had come to her live broadcasting room before and had seen her recommend the thousand-layer pancake ice cream. So during the holiday, they came to the store to give it a go.

Likewise, the ancient street has been making efforts to both maintain its original style and culture and make innovations based on the traditions. That, maybe, is its secret of making such a deep impression in the memory of many people
