A sharp increase in the quantity of fruits imported into Ningbo

Changes are taking place in the imported fruits markets in Ningbo. Cold chain transportation is under expansion and online shopping of imported fruits turns popular.
It is reported that more and more local fruits wholesalers has been directly importing fruits from the port of Ningbo, since its designation as the open port for fruits import in 2008.
“Differing from the traditional way of importing from Shanghai Port, we’ve been instead importing bananas from Ningbo since 2012”, the manager of an import and export co., Ltd said. He did accounts for this change. “Nearly 2000 yuan of transportation fee from Shanghai to Ningbo can be saved from each TEU, so that the price of imported bananas will be more competitive.”
According to the statistics of Ningbo Custom, the first two months of this year witnessed the increase in quantity and the rise in price. In January and February, 2055 metric tons of fruits were imported from Ningbo, a 1.1 times of increase year on year. ASEAN was the biggest market as regards the import and export trade with Ningbo. The import of banana, fresh longyan, and fresh cherry ranked top three.
“An important factor of the great increase in imported fruits is that the net of cold chain for fresh-keeping is expanded,” said Luo Yingying, a custom officer from custom-clearance center in Ningbo custom.
A local insider doing imported fruits business for years said that in the course of transportation, imported fruits are extremely sensitive to temperature and humidity. During this course, the containers are under special temperature control. Taking banana as an example, it is only the atmosphere of 14 degree centigrade that can guarantee a relatively long-term freshness of it. Currently, fruits imported into Ningbo are basically under the whole-journey management of cold chain, from overseas encasement to domestic distribution.
