Ningbo in the lead of China for efficiency of use of water

March 22 is the 22nd World Water Day. According to the Bulletin of Ningbo of Water Resources 2013, the water quality of the major water drinking water resources maintains good. The five large reservoirs as drinking water resources for the urban areas of the city basically maintain Class II in quality higher than the average of cities of the same rank. In addition, the city has witnessed a stable growth in the quantity of domestic water uses. In 2013 the total of water consumption in the city exceeded 2.2 billion cubic meters and in general the water consumption per GDP and that per 10,000 yuan industrial added value have witnessed a steady reduction. In 2013 the growth of industrial water consumption is far below the growth of the industrial added value. This indicates that Ningbo is in the lead of China in the efficiency of water consumption.

The bulletin show that in 2013, the total of water consumption reaches 2.214 billion cubic meters. Of the total, the total of domestic uses is 479 million cubic meters, about 3.0% more than in 2012, covering 21.6%% of the total. Of the 27 drinking water resources, 20 reach Class II for surface water standard, covering 74.1% of the total.

In 2013, the water consumption per 10,000 yuan GDP is 31 cubic meters, and the water consumption per 10,000 yuan of added value of industrial output is 16.2 cubic meters, increased by 6.1% and 4.7% respectively against 2012. For this result, Xun Chunqi, an expert of water conservancy said that despite the slight rise in the water consumption per GDP and per 10,000 yuan industrial added value, the water consumption per GDP and that per 10,000 yuan industrial added value have witnessed a steady reduction. In 2013 the growth of industrial water consumption is far below the growth of the industrial added value. Ningbo in the lead of China for efficiency of use of water, reaching the level of developed countries.

The steady growth of efficiency in water uses is a result of the following two reasons. On the one hand, Ningbo has effectively raised efficiency of uses of irrigation water by such agricultural water saving projects as irrigation region renovation, agricultural water demonstrative areas and standard farmland projects and so on. In 2013, Ningbo had the increase of agricultural water by 68 million cubic meters. On the other hand, the city has notably increased the efficiency of water uses by such measures as energy saving and discharge reduction programs. In 2013 the water saving of key industrial enterprises reaches 19 million cubic meters.
