Lacquer Paintings Exhibition held in Beilun District

Zhejiang (2012) Contemporary Lacquer Paintings Exhibition kicked off in Beilun Sports＆Training Base on Wednesday. The event was jointly sponsored by Zhejiang Artists Association, the Government of Beilun District, and the China Academy of Fine Arts. Lastinf from October 17 to 19, the exhibition serves as a part of the third International Port Cultural Festival.
The exhibition displayed more than 100 paintings from across the province. Rich in the content and varied in styles, these artworks reflects the high level of lacquer painting in Zhejiang Province. Professor Cheng Xiangjun from Tsinghua University said,"Lacquer painting started late in Zhejiang Province, but the famous Yan Painting developed in Zhejiang. About 7,000 years ago, ancestors in Hemudu( Now Ningbo Yuyao) started to use lacquer. Lacquer making is one of the oldest craft in China while lacquer painting is the newest art, which demands high craftsmanship as it is a combination of art and science. Zhejiang painters have made notable progress in innovating the content, artistic expression, and depth."
