Fresh oysters available in local market

As oyster season sets in, local oyster farmers are getting busy. Last weekend, oyster farmers in Chunhu Township of Fenghua, Ningbo were busy selling fresh oysters to traders.

The oyster farming in Chunhu Township dates back to more than 300 years ago. Every December marks the harvest season for local oyster farmers. Last Friday, a number of boats were busy transporting the finished oysters ashore in the Feijia Wharf, where many oyster farms are located. Several trucks were parking near the wharf, waiting for loading. Duped oyster shells had piled to a white hill. In the shacks near the wharf, women gathered in groups and opened oyster shells for meat with special tools in hands.

"The number of oyster farmers has reduced from 300 to 100 households in recent years. Moreover, wages of temporary labor are on the rise every year. We need to pay 12 yuan this year for picking one kilogram of oyster meat," said a local farmer named Hu Cunhua.

The oysters in Feijia Village are cultivated in every June and ready for sale in November to February. The fresh oyster meat is sold at the price of 50 yuan per kilogram this year. "Spring Festival will see the largest sale and you can see hundreds of farmers working on the wharf," said Hu Cunhua. The oysters are sold to Ningbo, Hangzhou, Shanghai and other cities. "Overseas visitors also love our oysters. Their favorite dishes are oyster with bamboo shoots, oyster omelet, and oyster soup."
