Export threshold for four types of household appliances to Taiwan to be increased

Recently, the energy efficiency standards and indication methods of energy conservation labels for the four major types of household appliances such as TV sets, water heaters, kitchen ventilators and monitors have been released in Taiwan. From December 13, 2012, the export threshold for the above appliances to Taiwan will be greatly increased and the goods that are not up to the standards will be turned down.

The standards mainly cover the following aspects: the standard for the testing of the four types of household appliances; the formula and parameters for the value of energy efficiency of the four categories; and the correct method of labeling the energy-efficiency level and related information, as well as the name and address of the producer on the products or packages.

Household appliances have always been the highlights of Ningbo's export. With the development of the two household appliance manufacturing bases in Yuyao County and Cixi County, the industry has become the booster and driving force for the new round of foreign trade for Ningbo. Statistics show that in the first 11 months this year, the inspection and quarantine departments inspected 179,100 batches of various household appliances for export with a total value of US$6.201 billion, up by 5.86% and 11.92% respectively over the same period last year. Among them, 811 batches of the export are from over 180 household appliance enterprises to Taiwan, with a total value of US$19.32 million. Exports to Taiwan have transformed from the traditional single category to the diversified categories including refrigerators, water dispensers and electric heaters, and the export structure has been further optimized.

Exports on inspection and quarantine point out that with the ever-increasing demands on energy-efficiency level and certification in some countries, the energy-efficiency labels are exerting great influence on the global development pattern and trend of household appliance industry. The constant and far-sighted investment in the technological R & D in energy conservation and environmental protection poses the difficulty of increasing productive cost to enterprises. The release of the energy-efficiency testing standards for the four major household appliances in Taiwan is an important symbol for the stricter market admittance standard and a significant signal of its connection with the international norms, which the related household appliance enterprises should take seriously.

The inspection and quarantine departments propose two tips for the related enterprises in dealing with the new situation. On the one hand, the enterprises should make energy conservation a key part of their product quality. By strengthening the research, development and application of the energy-saving technologies, and analyzing the energy-efficiency issues of the key parts and productive process, they should actively make efforts to improve their production line and technology. On the other hand, they should strengthen their cooperation with the inspection and quarantine departments as well as the labs with energy-efficiency certificates. By entrusting the qualified labs to regularly test their products and samples according to the international export standards, they can compare the testing results and improve the energy-efficiency index of their products, leading to a better prospect for their exports.
