It's Happening....

Grand Canal to be renamed Jing-Hang-Yong Grand Canal

On December 31, the Ningbo section of the Hang-Yong Canal opened. With the Shaoxing section that had opened earlier and the Hangzhou section, the whole Hang-Yong canal opened completely.

The Hang-Yong Canal runs through Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Ningbo, along the Qiantang River, the Xixiao River, the Cao'e River, the Yaojiang River and the Yongjiang River, 239 km long. The Ningbo section is 94 kms long, starting at the Aanjia Ford in Yuyao, along the Yaojiang River and ends at the Yongjiang River through the Yaojiang Lock.

The history of the Hang-Yong Canal is longer than the Jing-Hang Grand Canal. It was built by the Yue Kingdom as early as the late period Spring and Autumn Period. The renovation of the Hang-Yong Canal started in 2000, and the main project basically completed by the end of 2007.

The Canal is not only a link of Hangzhou, Shaoxing and Ningbo, but also a link of the waters in east Zhejiang, north Zhejiang and the main shipping network of the country. The Hong-Yong Canal links to the Jing-Hang Grand Canal at Hangzhou, This means that the Jing-Hang Grand Canal extends about 200 kms to the east and that the longest man-made canal in the world is linked to the port of Ningbo.

According to the calculation of Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Port Administration, the cargo shipping volume of the Hong-Yong Canal is equal to that of 4 or 5 Xiang-Yong Railway or the transport volume of the Hang-Yong Expressway. In other words, the daily cargo shipping volume of the Hong-Yong Canal is equivalent to that of 12,000 or 14,000 10-tonnage trucks.

Reportedly, with the opening of the Hong-Yong Canal, the Jing-Hang Grand Canal is to be renamed Jing-Hang-Yong Grand Canal.
