GEF assists low-carbon urban construction in Ningbo

Global Environment Facility (GEF), the leading public environment fund dedicated to developing countries, will donate 3.5 million USD in promoting Ningbo's Energy Efficiency Program and Renewable Energy Program, which starts from 2013 to 2018, according to an environmental conference held in Ningbo on Monday.

The two environmental programs were approved by the Ministry of Finance the Ministry of Housing in early 2011. Currently, Ningbo and Beijing will jointly carry out the energy efficiency and renewable energy programs with the GEF grants.

According to Ningbo Municipal Construction Committee, the total investment in Ningbo's programs amounted to 98.217 million yuan ($ 15.59 million). The programs aim at the following three targets:

The first target is to promote low-carbon livable urban development. Firstly, Ningbo will carry out more research and analysis on low-carbon urban life pattern. Secondly, Xiangshan Damu Bay Pilot Project is under way. The project aims to promote low-carbon life through new energy use, energy saving construction, low-carbon transport, and the building of low-carbon carbon sinks.

The second target is to improve the energy efficiency in large-scale public and commercial buildings. The Ningbo University Services Building will serve as a good example for promoting green technology in constructions in cities with similar climate. Its design and construction meets China's national standard three-star green building standards (or equivalent international rating).

The third target is to provide technical assistance for the project management. Seminars, training sessions and investigations will be organized to improve the productivity and efficiency of the working staff and ensure the success of the programs.
