Ningbo's tea export increases

The latest statistics from Ningbo Inspection and Quarantine Bureau show that in the first ten months of 2013, Ningbo exported 24,100 tons of tea with a total value of $101 million, up by 15.8% and 26.0% over the same period last year. The tea export saw its first negative growth after increases in ten consecutive years in 2012, however, since the beginning of this year, the tea export has restored to the level in 2011.

It is reported that the major export varieties in Ningbo include green tea, jasmine tea and Wulong tea. The green tea export reaches 23,400 tons, accounting for 97.4% of the total export volume. The jasmine tea export reaches 575.3 tons, up by 38.7%, serving as a new growth spot for tea export in Ningbo. In terms of the target markets, Ningbo tea has been exported to 37 countries and regions like Mauritania, Morocco, Japan and France. Among others, Africa has become the major market for Ningbo's tea export, with the volume of 20,600 tons, accounting for 85.5% of the total export.

It is learned from Ningbo Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that the increase of the tea exports thanks mainly to the following three factors: firstly, the enterprises actively adjusted their product structure. The related enterprises have improved the proportion of the eyebrow tea and developed some new specialty jasmine teas. Since the beginning of this year, the eyebrow tea has accounted for 50% of the total export, serving as the major force for tea exports from Ningbo. Secondly, the reliable quality brings market credibility to the enterprises. In the past two years, with the lessons learned from the reduction of the market caused by substandard tea products, the export enterprises have endeavored to develop markets by exporting to the high-end markets in the EU and Japan 1200 tons of tea, with a total value of $6.598 million, up by 44.5% and 52.3% respectively. Thirdly, demands of the African consumer market remain stable. As the traditional markets for Ningbo tea exports, such African countries as Mali and Mauritania have maintained relative political stability, which has boosted the consumption of the necessities of life, including tea products. In the first 10 months, Ningbo's tea export to Mauritania reached 6337 tons, with a total value of $27.268 million, up by 62.1% and 67.4% respectively compared with the same period last year, making Mauritania the biggest market for Ningbo's tea exports.
