First enterprise-constructed public rental housing put into use

"I just need to pay 490 yuan for a 60-square-meter apartment. That even includes property management fees," said Xin Yunfeng, a technician working for Ningbo Iron&Steel Co. Ltd.. Xin has just moved into his new home not long ago. More than 500 workers like Xin moved into their new homes in the public renting apartment constructed by Ningbo Iron&Steel Co. Ltd..

Having access to affordable housing has long been a very difficult problem for migrant works. With low or median income levels, many migrant families are unable to rent or purchase houses on the market due to the high prices of commercial houses. Since 2012, Beilun District called for local enterprises to become more involved with the public rental mechanism. As the first pilot program in Zhejiang Province, Beilun District issued policy support and encouraged large local enterprises to utilize land their previously developed land for the construction of public rental housing to reduce the brain drain.

Ningbo Iron&Steel Co. Ltd. is one the early movers. According to Zhou Xuedong, the company's deputy Party chief, the public housing apartments cover a construction area of 46,569 square meters with a total investment of about 150 million yuan with different floor plans available for single employees and those with families. The apartment area consists of five apartment buildings, a cafeteria, a fitness center, a club, and a playground. "We have distributed our housing units to 570 qualified employees. Through the public rental housing program, we hope we can help our needy employees to settle down before they are able to buy their own houses.

Xin has been working in Ningbo Iron&Steel Co. Ltd. since 2003. He had previously lived in a small rental apartment near the company. The 15-square-metre apartment cost him 500 yuan per month. It became so crowed when his baby was born. "I am happy we can move into the new home. It's like a condo with all the facilities. We are more motivated with new homes!"
