It's Happening....

Air quality remains below standard for 5 days

The air quality in Ningbo's urban districts has been rated as slight pollution for five consecutive days since November 15, as the city’s real-time air quality monitoring system revealed at 14:00 this Tuesday.

According to an official in Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, their monitoring data show the central urban air quality was slightly polluted on November 19, and the average AQI (Air Quality Index ) had surpassed 100, which indicates a slight air pollution. The official also revealed that the air quality in Ningbo's urban districts has been rated as slight pollution since November 15. The major pollutant is PM2.5. The AQI on November 15 stood at 152, indicating moderate air pollution. The AQI reported for the next three days surpassed 100, indicating slight air pollution. The pollution might continue if weather conditions remain unchanged, said the official.

Although a cold air from North China affected Ningbo last week, it does not ease the air pollution in Ningbo as people expected. According to experts in Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, the mild cold air didn't bring high winds which might have significantly improved Ningbo's air quality. Due to recent large temperature difference between morning and evening, an inversion layer has formed over the city, which hindered the spread of the pollutants. Besides, the recent dry weather worsened the situation. Shanghai, Hangzhou and other nearby cities also reported similar air problems in recent days. According to the expert, air pollution is likely to occur in Ningbo when the city sees two or more consecutive sunny days.

Even when air quality is poor, some citizens continue their outdoor exercise. local environmental experts suggests outdoor exercisers avoiding two "peak hours", namely, from 7 am to 10 pm in the morning and from 4 pm to 8 pm in the late afternoon. The air quality remains relatively good at noon.

Due to poor air quality, outdoor exercisers are suggested to do exercise in the evening rather than in the morning as the concentration of pollutants tend to drop after 20:00 and air quality improves. Experts also recommend exercisers to avoid outdoor sports on foggy days. Local citizens are encouraged to adjust their workout time based on air quality. Citizens can check air quality by logging in real-time air quality publishing platform in their PC or app on cell phone.
