Beilun offers colorful New Year goods for its people

As Spring Festival is around the corner, have you “heard” or “smelt” it? Several days ago, Beilun Cultural Center held a fresh and creative activity of volunteers sending their good wishes to the aged in nursing homes with paper-cuts for window decoration. This aroused their old feelings toward the lunar New Year. Those paper-cuts were in the shape of five-peaches which represent longevity, Chinese character “Fu” in various kinds and so on. Seeing all these, Mrs Yang, who is nearly eighty, said with a big smile that: “we no longer worry about food or clothes. We care more about spiritual fulfillment, and now all the feelings about the New Year in my memory spring up again.”

“Spring Festival atmosphere comes from not only adequate materials, but also rich culture.” said head of Publicity Department of Beilun. In order to keep the traditional Spring Festival atmosphere, Beilun has organized a series of new spring cultural activities to benefit the people since New Year’s Day. They elaborately “braised” colorful cultural goods for Spring Festival, encouraged more citizens to go out from their homes, leaving drinking, cards and mahjong behind to have a “cultural new year” and promote traditional Chinese culture.

“Cultural New Year” makes the New Year atmosphere stronger, and folk culture beautifies the Spring Festival. Beilun district held a series of exhibitions, including exhibition of historical folk relics and modern economy tickets themed traditional “cake mold”, special exhibition of “walls and bricks of Ningbo”, cultural salon of “culture enters enterprises” and visual art exhibition, and so on, which showed the glamour of traditional Chinese culture. Besides, popular Yue Opera plays such as Butterfly Love, Pearl Tower, Yang Naiwu and Xiao Baicai, etc. are fervently performed in the countryside of Beilun.

To sense history in museums, to enjoy books in libraries, to admire art in theater and watch folklore, guess lantern riddles and celebrate the Lantern Festival, etc. all those activities make people the leading role. Ling Xiaojun, Deputy Chief of Beilun Culture and Sports Bureau introduced that in addition to activities in district and counties, over 50 communities in Beilun had activities themed on hanging lanterns, delivering spring festival scrolls, sending calendars and posting the Chinese character “fu” to beautify the New Year.
