The Hang-Yong Canal opens

According to the "Notice of the Trial Opening of Ningbo Section of the Hang-Yong Canal by Ningbo Municipal Government, the Ningbo section of the Hang-Yong Canal opened on December 31. Navigation of freighters bellow 500-tonnage is available between Ningbo and Hangzhou. As a result, the Hang-Yong Canal opens completely and the east end of the Jing-Hang Grand Canal is open to the sea.

The Hang-Yong Canal is an extension of the Jing-Hang Grand Canal. The Hang-Yong Canal starts from Hangzhou, through Xiaoshan, Shaoxing, Shangyu, Yuyao and ends in Ningbo, 239 km long. The Ningbo section of the canal starts from Yuyao and ends at the mouth of the Yongjiang River, 94 km long.

It is estimated that the cargo shipping volume of the Hong-Yong Canal is equal to that of 4 or 5 Xiang-Yong Railway or the transport volume of the Hang-Yong Expressway, equivalent to that of 12,000 or 14,000 10-tonnage trucks. Ships from the inland areas can directly go to the port of Zhoushan, and this will promote the industries along the canal.
