Water, communications restored in Yuyao

Yuyao, the county-level city of Ningbo, has achieved initial success in its flood relief work after being severely affected in the recent typhoon-triggered storms. Till Thursday afternoon, the water supply has restored in 80 percent of the city and major highways in mountainous and plain areas are restored. Besides, 15 temporary bus lines are opened in urban districts, according to Xi Ming, mayor of Yuyao, in the second news conference held on Thursday.

While stepping up the overall control of the upstream water, Yuyao organized over 100 professional technical personnel to carry out drainage work day and night. It has mobilized 10 large pump trucks from Fujian Province, and cities of Nanjing and Wenzhou this Thursday. The drainage facilities are receiving an overall inspection before putting into use. Up to Thursday afternoon, the water level in urban area had dropped by 50 centimeters although Yao River still has a water level as high as 4.95 meters. The flood in most urban districts is expected to recede by the October 12.

 

To prevent the occurrence of secondary disasters, Yuyao organized specialists to carry out a 24-hour monitoring over ponds, reservoirs, flood-prone areas, urban river embankments, geological disaster-prone areas and other key areas. Besides, the evacuation of residents shall continue. Evacuated residents of the old buildings will not return home until the experts ensured the safety of these structures. Yuyao carried out a policy of displacing every resident in hazardous area and spared no efforts in the rescue of victims in worst-hit areas, the sick and the elders, as well as migrant workers. Up to 13:00 pm on October 10, the city has displaced over 99,500 residents.

While setting up self-reliant programs, Yuyao also received assistance from other cities in Zhejiang Province. To restore Yuyao's water supply as soon as possible, technicians from several companies in have arrived to offer help in repairing two major water plants. The water supply in urban area and northwest area to Yao River have been restored in the evening on Thursday. However, it might take some time to restore power due to the severe waterlog. A number of repair teams from other cities in Zhejiang Province are on their way to Yuyao. The city also strives to clear the flooded streets, tow away the stranded vehicles and other obstacles, and restore suspended bus lines as soon as possible.

Yuyao also called on all local CPC members to participate in the disaster relief on Wednesday. The party members will visit every disaster-hit household, learn their needs and offer aids. Meanwhile, the city also called on local residents to start self-reliance recovery and minimize the losses.

Local authority said the relief supplies are currently adequate. The city has set up 289 temporary shelters. It collects help information through telephone hotlines, text messaging, and microblogging online.
