According to the latest data released by IPO in Ningbo, from January to May in 2015, 1,041 and 533 patents have been applied and granted respectively in Yingzhou District, which became a leader in the field.

In recent years, the district has had a strong track record of patent growth, ranking first for five consecutive years. Ye Long, director of Technology Division, told us that patent development has emerged from quantity-driven to quality-based growth. Therefore, quality patent growth has become the norm. This is a positive change.

A new phase of improved quality with increased number has set in for IPR. According to statistics graph, it is noted that innovators such as businesses, research institutes and universities have taken on a prominent role in enhancing innovation capabilities. At the moment, 9 out of 10 patent applications come from enterprises. As market leaders, businesses are essential to indigenous innovation, an indication that an innovation system based mainly on businesses has taken hold.

Applications present a better mix. In the first fifth month this year, the area saw 4,158 and 3,249 items applied and granted respectively, among which 1,041 and 533 items come in the nature of invention. Invention patents increased by 114% though they take only a small proportion of the total. As such, more patents come from invention-related ones, an indication that the region enjoys improving innovation capabilities.

A patent is seen as an asset, by means of which businesses can grow their turnover. Underground Bracket developed by Huayuan secures a granted patent and enjoys a market share of more than hundreds of millions thanks to its properties such as insulation, anti-flaming and anti-corrosion. In the past three years, businesses revenues have grown by 20% annually, all driven by invention patents.
