130 villages renovated over two years

Taking a walk in Hopoling Village, a village in Ningbo's Xiangshan County, visitors are appealed by the bamboo paths, pavilions, wooden railings, and ancient wells, which reflect the original color of the old village and add a touch of natural taste to the small village.

"The pavilion and the bamboo path were previously filled with garbage and debris. After the shabby houses were relocated, the space was turned into a vegetable garden. Villagers can even pick the vegetables for free," said a woman surnamed Shi, who picked some vegetables and went home.

Over the past two years, 130 villages like Ho Po Village were renovated and take new look. There are a total of 398 underdeveloped villages in Ningbo. There villages suffer from poor condition due to underdeveloped economy and out-of dated infrastructure. To change the current situation and improve working and living conditions of local villagers, the municipal government issued a document titled "Proposals on Promoting the relatively underdeveloped Areas" at the end of 2011. One key move is to significantly improve the overall infrastructure of the village.

The city launched a renovation project two years ago. In 2012, financial departments on both city and county levels earmarked about 300 million yuan to each village. A total of 70 villages completed renovation projects in 2013 and another 60 villages completed renovation last year. 390 million yuan were funded for the renovation project. Authorities said Ningbo plans to complete the renovation of 50 villages this year.
