Demonstration area on marine ecological restoration to be built in Xiangshan Port

Ningbo will invest 27.86 million yuan in the construction of the demonstration area on marine ecological restoration in Xiangshan Port from this year. By 2015, the bio-remediation demonstration area will bemore than 4,000 mu (1 mu=0.067 hectare), including 800 mu of seaweed restoration area, 3000 mu of fish breeding habitat restoration area, and 300 mu of coastal green landscape along the Xiangshan Port Bridge.

With its advantages in resources and environment, Xiangshan Port plays an important role in the construction of core demonstration area for Zhejiang provincial marine economy and in Ningbo’s strategy of strengthening the city by developing marine economy. However, a series of improper exploitations has resulted in the decline of the quality of the marine ecological environment in Xianghsan Port area, such as the growing eutrophication phenomenon, the obvious decline of the fishery resources and the spreading desertification of the wetland caused by Spartina.

 

It is reported that the marine ecology in Xiangshan Port mainly needs four kinds of restoration, namely, to reduce eutrophication in sea by focusing on the reconstruction of marine seaweed; to gradually restore the fishery ecological environment by upgrading the major fishery resources and breeding habitats; to strengthen the ecological restoration and landscape reconstruction of the damaged shoals based on the construction of the Xiangshan Port Bridge; and to construct the experiment and research base for marine ecological restoration in Xiangshan Port and improve its research and innovation capacity by relying on the supports from Ningbo innovative base on marine technology.

In accordance with the planning, the seaweed area will be located along the waters from the Central Mountain of the Qiangjiao Islands to the north of Baishi Mountain. The local economic seaweed will be developed into natural seaweed field through human intervention and proliferation, to reduce the eutrophication of Xiangshan waters. The field can serve as proper spaces for marine lives to avoiding enemies, feeding and spawning, and can also provide high-quality raw materials for algin, medicine, food, fertilizer and bio-energy through protective exploitation.

The restoration project of the breeding habitat for important fish will mainly include the construction of artificial reefs, reinforcement and expanding of reef habitat functions, and fishing limitations on main breeding areas. For the protection and restoration of resources, Xiangshan Port has set up a number of resource protection areas, including the National Germplasm Resource Conservation Area, fish breeding reserve in Baishi Mountain area as well as the Philippines clam seedling reserves in Tiegang Port and Huangdun Port.

For the reconstruction project of the wetland landscape on both sides of Xiangshan Port Bridge, the Spartina along the bridge will be cleared, and the local mangroves will be transplanted to the shoals to create the green landscape belt. In the meanwhile, the carbon sequestration function of the large vegetation will improve the coastal marine environment.
