Well… the western New Year has passed. I could not blog about it because I spent this New Year with a friend in Hangzhou. I cannot very well write a blog about Ningbo from Hangzhou…. Can i?

So instead I’ll write about something a little closer to home.

Tengtou:

Tengtou is a unique Chinese village with a population of just under 900, when last I checked. What makes this place special is what the small group of villagers accomplished for themselves. A number of years ago, they collectively decided to push a unique “tourist” agenda, branding Tengtou as a window into china’s rural village life. While much of the Chinese population was gearing towards a manufacturing and metropolis lifestyle, slowly eating away at the small villages that used to dominate the countryside, Tengtou tried to maintain the village as a shining example of what used to be.

They do this thru some cool interactive attractions and nature based programs aimed at natural sustainability. For example… in one part of the village they have a beautiful expansive greenhouse erected housing some rare plants and focusing on new hydroponic growing techniques. While on the other side of the village they had me monkeying around with hoists, buckets and a devise I can only describe as an enormous exercise bicycle contraption rigged to a rotating system of buckets. The area is meant to interactively show you how villagers in the past manually transported water using old methods. Definitely not the rice harvesting village life I would expect, but in Tengtou, it is a mixture of old and new. On top of the sites, which are fun and educational, there are the villagers themselves. Smiles abound and you can really see a connection with the people to the village. Everywhere you see that people are proud of what they have accomplished, and they should be. Book Reading at Shangri_la Hotel 17th January 7Pm

On January 17, 2012 7Pm, German writer Stefan Schomann will give a lecture from his book „Letzte Zuflucht Schanghai“ (Last Refuge in Shanghai). It tells the true and highly unusual love story between Robert Sokal, a poor refugee from Vienna, and Chenchu Yang, a young lady from a well-to-do family from Ningbo. They met during World War II in Shanghai and, despite of all opposition and the dramatic circumstances in this “age of extremes”, they became a couple.

The lecture will be in English, with some samples in German and Chinese. It will start at 7 p.m.

On this occasion, Mr. Schomann will also give an introduction to his exhibition “Lost China”, which features historic photographs taken by Eugen Flegler, a German professor at Tongji University in the 1930s. The exhibition will be shown at the Ningbo Museum, opening on January 18 at 4 p.m.

Ninghai: Host of Tourist Day of China

At the recently held meeting of Zhejiang on tourism for 2012, Ninghai's being chosen as host of Tourist Day of China and the West Lake's being listed in the World Cultural Heritages were elected greatest events of the tourism of Zhejiang for 2011.

On April 10, 2011, the State Council set May 19, the date of the first note in Xu Xiake's Travel Notes, as Tourist Day of China.  On that first Tourist Day of China, the National Tourism Administration and Zhejiang Provincial Government held a ceremony for the festival and all the scenic spots in Ninghai opened for free to the public for three days.

The Tourist Day of China has notably promoted the tourism in Ninghai. In the last year, Ninghai county received 6,000,000 domestic tourists, 16.5% more than the previous year. The income from tourism totaled 620 million yuan, up by 17% over the same period of previous year.

New progress of the International Automobile Industry City in Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area

On the morning of January 1, Shanghai Volkswagen started its Ningbo project in Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area. Wang Huizhong, Member of the Standing Committee of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Chairman of Ningbo Standing Committee of People's Congress, Tang Yijun, Chairman of Ningbo Municipal People's Political Consultative Conference, Chen Xin, Vice Secretary of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Party Work Committee of Hangzhou Bay New Area Administrative Committee, and Zhang Hailiang, Manager General of Shanghai Volkswagen, attended the foundation laying ceremony.

With its total investment exceeding 10 billion yuan, the Shanghai Volkswagen project in Ningbo is the first international automobile project settled in Ningbo. The project is featured for its good quality, great investment, and locomotive role. As one of the 14 provincial-level industrial clustering zones of Zhejiang, Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area is an important one for automobile industry. So far 16 high-end automobile projects have signed agreements to settle in the area, and 8 of them have started construction. An international automobile industrial city is taking shape in the area.

On behalf of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee, Ningbo People's Congress, Ningbo Municipal Government and Ningbo People's Political Consultative Conference, Party Working Committee and the Administrative Committee of Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area, Chen Xin expressed his congratulations to the full scale construction of the project and his thanks to the Shanghai Volkswagen Project Team and related municipal departments. He said that the Shanghai Volkswagen project will certainly further promote the construction of Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Industrial Clustering Zone and the construction of the new area as a place perfect for ecological environment, living and tourism. He said that the project will certainly speed up the development of the modern high-end industries of Ningbo, promote industrial upgrading and power the "6 accelerating strategy" of Ningbo.

In his speech, Zhang Hailiang said that the Shanghai Volkswagen project in Ningbo will further expand the capacity of Shanghai Volkswagen to meet the demand of the market, the Changjiang River Deltaand optimize the regional industrial structure.

Charity bazaar held by urban management volunteers

At nine o'clock sharp on January 8, a large charity bazaar as well as the recruitment activity for urban management volunteers, hosted by Ningbo Urban Management Volunteer Association, will be held in all districts and counties of Ningbo.

It is learned that all kinds of handicrafts, creative works, daily necessities and communication equipments, raised by more than 30,000 urban management volunteers, will be gathered on the charity bazaar. In the meantime, the recruitment activity for urban management volunteers will be held and each applicant will get a nice present. It is learned that the money from this charity event will all be donated to those urban management volunteers in need to guarantee a happy Spring Festival for their families

Major projects start at the turn of the year in Ninghai County

Just before the New Year's Day, as the climax of Ninghai's "100-day tackling campaign", the 11 major projects started simultaneously with a total investment of 3.5 billion yuan.

The 11 projects are part of the focused job of Ninghai County, during the Spring Festival period, another 12 major projects will be launched with a total investment of 10 billion yuan. Upon completion, these projects will bring new impetus to Ninghai's economic and social development.

Song Wei, member of the Standing Committee of Ningbo Party Committee and Director of Ningbo Publicity Department, Vice-mayor Cheng Yuechong, and Wang Jiankang, Vice-chairman of Ningbo People’s Political Consultative Conference, attended the project-launching ceremony.

"This is an important practice in line with the requirements of the 'Three Thinks and Three Pursues' campaign and 'Six Speed-up' strategy. And it will promote the urbanization process, improve people's livelihood and accelerate Ninghai's construction of the national ecological county." commented a related official from Ningbo Party Committee and Ninghai Government.

It is reported that since September last year, the "100-day tackling campaign" for major projects has been launched by adopting the leader responsibility system in the county. A coordination committee was founded to guide the campaign, and all the major projects are carried out in a countdown manner to guarantee the achievement of the objectives on time. Statistics show that in 2011, the accumulated investment in the fixed assets in Ninghai County reached 10.22 billion yuan, up by 23.2% over the previous year
