Ningbo's petty trade to Taiwan more than tripled

In the first quarter of 2013, 11 batches of petty trade to Taiwan were conducted, with a value of US$4.707, up by 253.9%, reaching the historical high of the same period. The entry amount reached US$1.919 million and exit amount, US$278.8 million, up by 1049.1% and 139.7% respectively.

The sharp growth can be attributed to the following reasons. Firstly, in recent years, with the joint efforts from local government and inspection and quarantine deparments, the petty trade sports a diversified development and a wide radiation. The across-strait business has greatly developed with more contacts of both sides. Since the beginning of 2012, over 100 Taiwan merchants have been to Ningbo for further research and negotiation. Secondly, the enterprises involved in petty trade to Taiwan have made efforts to transform and upgrade themselves to adjust to the ever-changing market. Unlike before when food and cosmetics were the major products for import and export, they are turning their eyes to more other varieties including industrial products. In the first quarter, the range of the entry industrial products increased, with the majority being high-priced products. Thirdly, the radiation effect of petty trade to Taiwan becomes more explicit. In the past, Shanghai was the only operation site, while now the whole East China has been covered and the area for purchases has been further expanded.

Xiangshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau actively take measures to adapt to the rapid growth of the import and export petty trade to Taiwan. Firstly, by further cooperation with local government, the bureau has planned and built such basic infrastructure as the supporting port supervision and inspection facilities, as well as storage fields. The cold chain has been established, and the specialized port for trade with Taiwan has been built for more convenient clearance. Secondly, by cooperating with some related departments, the bureau has helped to plan the grouper breeding base in Xiangshan, which greatly promoted the marine industrial upgrading, imports and exports and circulation of fresh farm products and aquatic products, and led to the fast development of the marine industry chain in the Yangtze River Delta area. Thirdly, by strengthening the cross-strait cooperation, such major problems related with inspection and quarantine, product quality and food security have become the common concern for the inspection and quarantine departments from both sides. While carrying out their duties, they are making efforts to optimize the procedure and facilitate operations.
