Modern agricultural park promotes waxberries’ industrialization

The rainy weather in recent days has largely shortened the time-span of waxberries in the market. While catching up the last train of the waxberry season, Dashan Village of Cixi City, the best-known hometown of waxberry in China, benefited a lot from the newly-built modern agricultural park.
Dashan Village is located on the southern end of Cixi City, and both sides of the road leading to the village are planted with waxberry trees and bamboo trees.
Cars can go directly into the waxberry forest through a road to the mountain top. Mr. Hu, a farmer who makes a living on waxberry planting introduced that the cement road and steps made the forest easily accessible comparing to the previous muddy road that kept cars from entering, which left a myriad of waxberries rotten on the ground. Huang Shiwen, an officer on the agricultural work said that the project of building a demo area for waxberry industry with an investment of 6.8 million yuan was started in December of 2012 and till now some basic programs including the 8,750 meters long road had been finished.
Several greenhouses capped by thin white membranes are prominent in the waxberry forest, which is said to be the project launched two years ago for early-ripened waxberries. “The area has been enlarged to 10, 000 square meters”, said Huang. The early-ripened waxberries can be put into the market in late May and will be priced at 120 yuan per kilo.
In the hollow of the Waxberry Base in Zilai Village was built a garden that housed 25 different kinds of waxberry trees. It is learned that the local market now it filled with only kind of waxberry fruit, which means larger risk. “The garden to plant waxberry tree varieties is an important part for a modern agricultural park, with the aims to protect tree varieties and lay the foundation for further study”, said Huang.
Statistics show that the output of waxberries in Henghe amounted to 250,000 tons this year, up by 25 percent year on year. What is worth noting is that the yield value of every mu of the demo area added up to 10,000 yuan, 60 percent higher than that of the non-demo area.
