Tomb-Sweeping Day goes green

During the three-day Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, more local residents chose environmentally-friendly ways to spend the holiday such as flower sacrifices instead of burning paper "spirit" money and setting off firecrackers, which are harmful to environment.

In a public cemetery in Yuyao City, many mourners began to lay flowers or food sacrifices instead of setting off firecrackers during memorials. According to the sellers of sacrificial offerings, flowers are more popular than other sacrificial items like firecrackers, fake money, or incense this year.

Tongtai public Cemetery in Yinzhou District offer free flowers for the visitors on Qingming Festival. More than 500 flowers were given off on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the cemetery also provided a free mourning music service for the visitors, who can ask for playing favorite songs for their lost beloved ones. The Service Center of Yinzhou District Civil Affairs Bureau organized dozens of volunteers to hold a small memorial concert for mourners. "we make efforts to call for more citizens to lay flowers celebrate Qingming Festival in an environment friendly way," said the head of the service center.

In a public cemetery in Beilun District, most visitors paid homage to the deceased by laying out flowers. The hot items sold at stands at the cemetery entrance are also fresh or plastic flowers instead of firecrackers or fake paper money.

Some local neighborhood communities also gave off free flowers for residents, calling for local citizens to abandon the customs of burning paper sacrifices.

While more residents choose to celebrate Qingming Festival in an environment friendly way, some citizens still keep the traditional way of mourning.
