"Fitow" brings record rainfall to Ningbo

Although weakened after landing, Typhoon "Fotow" continued to bring heavy rains to Ningbo on Tuesday. With its record-high rainfall, the typhoon was the most devastating one in Ningbo’s history.

In response to the heavy rainfall, the Municipal Meteorological Center issued orange rainstorm alert, the second highest of a four-level warning system, on 5:00 am on Tuesday. It was upgraded to red rainstorm alert an hour later, which indicates the rainfall had reached 50-100 millimeters in north of Ningbo in three hours. The rainfall reached 20 millimeters in other regions of Ningbo.

Statistics show, typhoon "Fotow", together with a cold air from North China, has brought a record-high rainfall of 397 millimeters by 20:00 pm on October 8. This has surpassed last year’s notorious Typhoon "Anemone" and Typhoon No. 6312 that caused 337 millimeters rainfall.

According to the meteorological experts, a cold air from North China hit Ningbo after the typhoon made its landfall, resulting in heavy precipitation. The rainfall continued after the typhoon center moved away. In addition, the landfall coincided with the astronomical high tide, which affected drainage and worsened the situation.

Besides, the 24th tropical storm "Danas" which followed Typhoon "Fotow" affected the direction of "Fotow" and increased the rainfall.

The good news is that Typhoon "Danas" has weakened into a tropical storm at 14:00 pm on Tuesday, and has left the marine area of Ningbo.

Meteorological experts said the heavy rain will soon come to an end, but there would be light rain at night and turned to cloudy on Wednesday. Ningbo will see cloudy skies in the coming four days, which helps the on-going disaster relief and recovery arrangement. Weather forecasters said a cold air from North China might bring a rainfall and a dramatic temperature drop between the October 14 and 15.
