Recently, around the Oriental Flower Expo Park of the Dongqian Lake Tourist Resort, and the Er'ling Mountain and Fuqian Mountain of Dongqian Lake Town, gardeners have been digging holes for the planting of over 90,000 such colorful greening trees as sweetgums, phoebe chekiangensis and sassafras. According the plan, by March 2005, when the project will have been completed, Dongqian Lake can boast three stripes of colorful landscape forest belts. So far, the forest coverage rate of Ningbo is over 50%, but most of the forest landscapes are not so good in quality, simple in function and weak in ecological function. "With the background of the ‘Beautiful Ningbo’ project, we think it necessary to have the colorful forests rather than the simple green ones, which will improve the ecological service function of them." said Huang Hui, Director of Ningbo Municipal Forestry Bureau. By planting, supplementing, reforming and reserving trees, the project aims to increase the proportion of rare varieties and colorful trees, in combination with other forest cultivating and protecting measures as greening of the mining areas and roads, forest fire prevention and forest pest control. According to staff from Ningbo Greening Commission, the colorful trees can be appreciated for their leaves, branches, flowers or even fruits. The colorful trees will mainly be those from the local areas rather than imports from abroad.
