Hemudu selected as "Top 100 Archaeological Discoveries in a Century"

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of modern Chinese archaeology. On October 18, the "3rd China Archaeology Conference" opened in Sanmenxia City, Henan Province. At the opening ceremony, under the guidance of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Chinese Society of Archaeology and the China Cultural Relics News published the "Top 100 Archaeological Discoveries in a Century", and the Hemudu site in Yuyao, Zhejiang was selected.

In terms of geographical distribution, the "Top 100 Great Archaeological Discoveries in a Century" cover 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities (including Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan) across the country. Henan and Shaanxi, which have rich historical heritage and are known as "large cultural relic provinces" and "archaeological provinces", have 14 and 11 selected respectively, Hebei, Shandong, and Hubei each has 6 selected, Shanxi has 5 selected, and Beijing, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Gansu each has 4. In addition to the Hemudu site in Yuyao, Zhejiang also has the Pujiang Shangshan site, the Yuhang Liangzhu site, the Southern Song Lin'an city site and the official kiln site in Hangzhou.

The Yuyao Hemudu Cultural Site is also described as "Yuyao Hemudu Cultural Site Group" when it was shortlisted. According to the declaration materials provided by Sun Guoping, a researcher at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Hemudu Cultural Research Center, the "Hemudu Cultural Site Group" includes three Neolithic settlement sites of Hemudu, Tianluoshan, and Mushan that belong to the Hemudu culture.
