The University of Nottingham is on a major recruitment drive as it expands its engineering degree offerings and research programmes at its university in China. Full story below…
University to hire another 30 engineering academics

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China will appoint another 30 academics to join its talented engineering team as it expands its degree programmes and grows its research programmes.

The University’s Science and Engineering Faculty is advertising posts for professors, associate professors and lecturers across all its engineering disciplines. These include: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, architectural environment engineering, product design and manufacture, engineering surveying and architecture.

Closing dates for posts are from the end of January to early March, with the University looking to take on new staff in time for the next academic year which begins in September 2012. The positions will soon be advertised on several websites, including www.academics-in-china.com, and will be posted in the jobs’ section on the University’s website.

Professor Gethin Wyn Roberts, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, said: “We are looking for ambitious, talented academics from reputable universities and research organisations from across the world to join our dynamic team here in China.

“We are expanding our range of degree programmes to cater for increased demand for professional engineers in Ningbo and China and general, and expect greater demand for our architecture degree courses

“We are also rolling out exciting international research projects that have the full support and generous funding from the Chinese authorities and other organisations,” he said.

Professor Roberts said the positions currently advertised are generally best-suited to ambitious, talented individuals who want to shape their own research agendas.

“The University is looking for academics who would appreciate the opportunity to be part of one of the UK’s top five faculties for engineering while delivering lecture programmes and conducting research from the vantage point of China – undoubtedly the world’s most exciting economy,” he said.

“All curriculum development and teaching programmes are led from the UK, so you will be able to draw on excellent resources to assist you in delivering course content at our unique, pioneering university in China,” noted Professor Roberts.

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China has been investing significant resources in its engineering facilities to ensure academics can deliver internationally excellent teaching and undertake world-changing research.

“The University is equipped with modern experimental and computational facilities in its new Science and Engineering Building. It has award-winning laboratories in which to conduct scientific investigations and make exciting discoveries,” said Professor Roberts.

Remuneration packages for international staff are attractive and in line with UK university levels.

International appointments are given the opportunity to live in comfortable accommodation on the secure, park-like campus, which has shops, restaurants, a bank, post office and 24-hour clinic conveniently located on its high street.

Professor Roberts said Ningbo is one of China’s most attractive, and less-expensive, cities in which to live. It is a useful base for staff who would like the opportunity to learn more about China and travel extensively around Asia.

“The lifestyle is comfortable here, with many sporting and outdoor opportunities as well as hundreds of restaurants and entertainment venues. You can be part of a close-knit and vibrant international university community, which has its roots on campus and networks across the city of Ningbo,” he said.

The University opened its doors in 2004 as the first Sino-foreign collaborative university with full approval of the authorities. All degree programmes are taught in English and all graduates are awarded British degrees from The University of Nottingham (UK).

The University’s successes, including its high employment rate among its graduates, have paved the way for the establishment of other Sino-foreign universities in China and have attracted many important visitors to the campus.

In a strong signal that the Chinese government fully supports its work as a pioneer in international education, China’s Premier Wen Jiabao – who leads the country alongside President Hu Jintao – paid a surprise visit to The University of Nottingham Ningbo China in April.

The University has attracted significant research funding for international collaborative projects and recently announced that it would award more than 100 PhD scholarships, mostly in the fields of energy, the digital economy and other science and engineering disciplines.

The scholarships are part of a bold multi-million pound science and technology project based at the university’s new International Doctoral Innovation Centre in Ningbo.

The University also has a new innovation team that will work with at least 50 companies on inventing and improving low-carbon technologies and developing new sustainable, environmentally friendly business models for Ningbo’s manufacturing sector.

East section of around-city freeway to be open to traffic

On December 14, the east section of Ningbo around-city freeway was completed and passed acceptance check. It means that the whole project has been completed and it will be open to traffic from the later part of this month.

The 44-kilometer-long east section of Ningbo around-city freeway starts from the north interchange of Jiangshan of the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Freeway, passes Yunlong, Dongqian Lake, Wuxiang, Haosifang, Linjiang, Shahe and Jiulong Lake, and then stops at Yanjia Bridge to meet the starting point of the west section of the around-city freeway.

The east section directly connects the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Freeway, Xiangshan Port Bridge and its connecting line, Chuanshan Traffic-dispersing Freeway and Zhoushan Land-island Freeway, and functions as the core of the freeway network of the south bank of Hangzhou Bay.

After its completion and opening, the east section will connect with the west section to form the "freeway ring", which will be the core and pivot of the road traffic system in Ningbo and the second largest traffic hub in Zhejiang Province. The freeway plays an important role in constructing the modern comprehensive traffic system, promoting the urban space development, improving the urban space structure, relieving the urban traffic pressure, and promoting the integration and modernization of the economy in Yangtze River Delta

Comprehensive competitiveness of industries in Ningbo continues to improve

It is estimated that by eliminating the backward production capacity, Ningbo will reduce the yearly consumption of electricity by one billion KWH. Thanks to the policy of cultivating strategic emerging industries, the proportion of the eight strategic emerging industries occupied one-fifth of the total industrial output in the first three quarters of this year. All such achievements, mentioned by Zhang Shifang, Deputy Director of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission and Director of the Municipal Industrial Upgrading Office, in his speech delivered in the press conference on December 14, demonstrated that at the first year of the 12th Five-year Plan Ningbo accelerated its industrial upgrading and its comprehensive competitiveness of industries enhanced continually.

The port industry stepped onto a new stage by sticking to the revolving-oriented development. With the promotion of the extension project of Geely Automobile in Chunxiao Town of Beilun District and the 10 billion-yuan project in Wanhua Industrial Park of Daxie Development Zone, the port industry in Ningbo has further increased in aggregation and improved in comprehensive competitiveness. In the first ten months of this year, the developing rate of port industry took the lead among all the industries in Ningbo, with an increase of 34.4% in petroleum processing industry, 45.8% in chemical raw materials and products, and 40.2% in chemical fiber industry, much higher than the average growth rate.

The transformation of the traditional industries accelerated significantly by sticking to transforming and upgrading. In the past year, Ningbo has increased its efforts in technological reform and elimination of backward production capacity, strengthened the innovation of core technology and techniques and attached great importance to improving industrial competitiveness. It is estimated that the elimination of the 376 enterprises in 17 industries may save one billion KWH of electricity and 530,000 ton of standard coal. 13 enterprises in Ningbo rank among the 2011 top 500 manufacturers in China, taking up one-fifth of those selected in the whole province.

Cultivation of the emerging industries began to achieve initial success by sticking to planning ahead. In the first three quarters, the eight strategic emerging industries (such as new energy industry) realized an output value of 166.38 billion yuan, increasing its proportion in the total industry output value by 19.1%. A batch of demonstration projects have been moving forward in order, and a case in point is the construction of the Ningbo base project of China South Locomotive with an investment of 3 billion yuan, which will boast of an output of 150 rail transit vehicles.

The development energy of modern services industry was improved by sticking to the high-end orientation. In the last year, Ningbo has quickened its construction of a batch of major projects in services industry. The development energy of modern services industry has greatly been improved with the added value for the first three quarters reaching 172.67 billion yuan, up by 9.3% over the same period last year. So far, there have been 315 technology service institutes included in the statistics in Ningbo. It is estimated that the turnover of bulk commodity may reach over 200 billion yuan as commodity trading and headquarter economy are still on the rise.

Strengthening the technological innovation is the key to industrial transformation and upgrading. This year, the budget for technological expense stands at 2.502 billion yuan, up by 13%. In the first ten months, the technological activity expenses of the above-scale industries reached 9.7 billion yuan, up by about 30%. In the first three quarters, the cumulative volume of invention patents in Ningbo reached 1218, up by 40% over the same period last year.

The essential factor support and mechanism innovation guaranteed the progress of industrial transformation and upgrading. This year, the municipal financial budget for accelerating industrial transformation and upgrading reached 2.23 billion yuan, taking up 14% of the available municipal financial resources. In the meanwhile, by actively reforming the means of financial support, the city has seen a better play of the financial lever effect and leading role
