Ningbo has exported its first batch of frozen grilled eel to Singapore recently, said local authorities. The 9.9 tons of grilled eel, worth $ 263,000, is inspected by Cixi Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. So far, Singapore has become another emerging market for Ningbo-made grilled eel, next to Japan, the European Union, the United States, Canada, and Russia.

Industry sources said processed eel products demand strict quality controlling system. Besides, the eel industry depends heavily on international markets. Any problems in farming, processing, storage and transportation will hurt the sustainability of the industry. China's eel exports have dropped drastically over the past few years amid the financial crisis and tainted-food scares. Facing the challenges, Ningbo's eel producers have stepped up efforts to combat tainted-seafood exports by carrying out stricter inspections and increasing investment in quality assurance and eel farming. Despite the challenging conditions, Ningbo stills sees growing eel export.
