Statistics from Ningbo Port Co. Ltd. show that in May the container throughput of Ningbo port reached 1.432 TEUs, exceeding the 1.4 million TEUs mark for the first time, up by 12.3% over the same period last year, and reached a monthly new historical high. Specifically speaking, the water transit and domestic box transactions performed most impressively.
In May, seven more container routes were opened from Ningbo Port. By the end of May, there had been 233 container routes including 118 ocean routes, accounting for 50.64% of all the routes.
With regard to water transit, Ningbo Port strengthened its strategic cooperation with the shipping giants in the world and managed to attract shipping companies to make Ningbo Port their transit center. In this way, the port accomplished the water transit container volume of 299,000 TEUs, up by 30% over the same period last year.
Since the beginning of this year, the economic situation of such major trade areas as Europe and the United States has been looking blue, which greatly affected the growth of export volume of containers of major coastal ports. To address this, by making the most of the national policy of expending domestic demands, Ningbo Port strengthened its strategic cooperation with the domestic main-line shipping companies and succeeded in becoming a docking port for coastal ports from the north and south of China. Ningbo Port arranged all kinds of affiliated routes reasonably and soon became the leading transit for containers from North Zhejiang Province and South Zhejiang Province by taking advantage of its truck fleet and ship freight booking platform. The port also made efforts to exploit the domestic container market. In May, its container throughput reached 162,000 TEUs, up by 35.6 over the same period last year.
In addition, Ningbo Port actively promoted its container railway-water transport business, focusing on developing the market in Jiangxi Province. In mid-April, the Shangrao – Ningbo freight train for container railway-water transport was listed in the national plan of fast freight trains. At the beginning of May, it became eligible to apply for wagons to Nanchang Railway Administration. Ningbo Port Group established the "Northeast China – Ningbo – Jiangxi" railway-water transport route in cooperation with a large-scale copper processing and smelting enterprise, and has now achieved some initial results. In the first five months this year, the volume of containers transferred in Ningbo Port through the route reached 7.16 TEUs, up by 35.6% over the same period last year
