University of Nottingham, Ningbo, co-builds laboratory with Atmel

The AVR Micro-controller Lab, co-built by the University of Nottingham, Ningbo and Atmel, was established on September 18, with all its experiment equipment being the latest micro-controllers and supporting software from Atmel. This is a high-end micro-controller lab co-built by a university and Atmel, the leader in touch control technology solutions.

Based on the lab, the university will conduct the micro-controller courses based on the Atmel technologies. With the focus on such emerging fields as the internet of things, wearable devices and wireless technology, they will provide corresponding course and research resources for undergraduates, graduates and doctoral students, to foster the internationalized talents for the field of high-tech electronics.

In the future, the two parties will continue to carry out more in-depth cooperation in such fields as talent training, internship and employment, technological service support, scientific innovation and commercialization of sci-tech achievements

Ningbo Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation set up

Ningbo Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation was officially set up on the afternoon of August 21. Yang Liping, member of the Standing Committee of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Director of the Organizing Department, and Vice-mayor Chen Zhongchao, attended the opening ceremony of the institute and delivered important speeches. 
"To break the bottleneck of the traditional industries, Ningbo needs to realize transformation and upgrading, which is based on talents, especially the entrepreneurs with good understanding of the new economy and enough enthusiasm." said Jin Hui, one of the co-founders of the institute and Secretary-general of Ningbo Entrepreneurship Federation and Equity Investment and Venture Investment Association, who hopes to make up for the "short board" of Ningbo in venture education through market-oriented operations. 
The institute will mainly provide two kinds of core module courses, namely "growth camp for founders" and "accelerator for young entrepreneurs". It will invite over 50 industrial leaders and capital tycoons as mentors to conduct overall and targeted instructions for the new entrepreneurs, and aim to improve the entrepreneurial capacity of the entrepreneurs by setting up the venture resource platforms based on the industrial transformation and upgrading conditions in Ningbo. 
Meanwhile, the institute will promote the integration of venture education and specialized education, and gradually form a special educational system integrating courses, activities, training, and incubation. 
"Our target is to recruit 100 venture founders and 150 graduate entrepreneurs each year and cultivate them as new venture force. And in the meantime, we will cultivate, introduce and incubate a group of high-tech enterprises with leading technologies and innovative models, to create the entrepreneurial and innovative atmosphere in Ningbo." said a related person in charge from the institute. 

‘Dark Horse’ Back to Silicon Valley

First held in 2014, the ‘Dark Horse’ competition has again set foot in Silicon Valley. On the afternoon of September 12 local time, the Silicon Valley qualification trial of the Dark Horse Competition of World New Material Industry starts. At last, 5 projects succeed in advancing into the final held in Ningbo out of the 30 competing projects. 
The polymer PM2.5 filtering membrane developed by Professor Cuiyi from Materials Engineering Department of Stanford University wins unanimous approval of the audience and judges. Some audience even gives Professor Cui a nickname of ‘Big Whiz Cui’. ‘This project can not only filter PM2.5, but also bacteria and virus. It can be widely applied in things like building screen window and auto vent pipe cover. The cost is almost equivalent to that of traditional screen window cloth.’ says Professor Cui, ‘and it is assessed that its market size will reach 80 billion dollars.’ He hopes to raise a capital of 20 million dollars and accelerate the establishment of the production line of the project in China. The project is awarded the first prize. Many investment companies on the occasion have extended the olive branch to Professor Cui, and reached primary agreement on investment.
Doctor David Abram who also comes from material department of Stanford University brings an electronic light-adjust film project named ‘NexTint’. The project combines the privileges of low-cost, glare moderation and energy saving. ‘Take America for example, the cost of a skyscraper on air-conditioning, heating, etc. can reach 400 thousand dollars per year. This technology is estimated to be widely applied in glare reducing, nation-wide glass style renovation, and house, car window and glasses around the world.’ says David Abram.

Comprehensive Investigation into Hidden Dangers in Chemicals

Committed to zero tolerance and full coverage, Ningbo Municipal Ministry of Public Security acts responsibly to find out hidden chemical dangers in an all-round examination effort, according to sources from the ministry on Sunday.

On the evening of August 13th, the public security authorities held a meeting on work safety and clarified the division of work for each responsible person. The next day saw fire department stage a one-and-a-half-months campaign that aims to ensure work safety at areas with concentrated hazardous chemicals and flammable and combustible materials. More than 280 units have been investigated, 12 petrochemical businesses included.

Beyond that, the department is about to undertake a training session, a comprehensive investigation into hidden dangers, an emergency response drill in a tank zone. Businesses that operate illegally with potential fire hazards will be held accountable in accordance with the law. As a way of weeding out potential dangers, the department will submit a proposal the local government to close or relocate facilities, including schools, hospitals, old people’s home, residential quarters, and other places where a lot of people live or work, if these buildings are exposed to such potential hazards as fire, explosions, and leakage of toxic gases.

The Ministry of Public Security notified fire fighting units and sites with flammable and combustible materials on self-imposed examination of potential hazards soon after the blasts hit Tianjin. Fire prevention unit, public security unit and local police stations launched thorough investigation into Beilin and Zhenhai gas stations, storage yard for dangerous articles, chemical storage tanks. Beyond that, police forces were brought into action to do the same job at municipal level to ensure work safety at Ningbo’s port.

The same campaign was also set in motion in Zhenhai and Beilun districts, home to most businesses dealing with hazardous materials. Zhenhai public security bureau lost no time in checking danger-prone zones and carried out regulations to ensure closed management of petrochemical zones and tightened safety controls on roads transporting these materials. The bureau in Beilun also conducted examinations of piers, chemical zones, among others. Spot check was undertaken on some units for erasing hidden dangers.
