Basketball stand falls and kills student

A pick-up game of basketball at Jinggangshan University in Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province turns tragic after a basketball stand fell and killed a freshman student yesterday noon, Xinhua.net reported.

The 22-year old victim, from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, was crushed by the basketball stand while making a layup during his pregame warm-up. Although he was immediately rushed to hospital, he later died due to his injuries.

A witness told the reporter that the falling stand knocked the boy down when he jumped up and the whole backboard fell on his neck.

The basketball stand was suspected to be in bad quality after years of use.

Xiao Changchun, vice-president of the university, said an oversight in checking the sports equipment was one factor that led to the boy's death and the university should take responsibility.

The cause of the stand's fall is still being investigated.
