In the face of the complicated and changing international shipping environment, Ningbo used multiple approaches to overcome difficulties, and the shipping economy has continued to develop steadily. On July 20th, statistics from the Ningbo Port and Shipping Administration showed that in the first half of 2019, the city's investment in water transport construction was 2.017 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 107.7%; the waterway cargo volume reached 148.64 million tons, an increase of 19.29%.

Since 2019, due to factors such as Sino-US trade friction, the shipping economy index has been running weakly. From January to May, the average shipping economy index of Ningbo was 102.71 points, down 2.9% year-on-year; the average confidence index of shipping companies was 96.11 points, up 0.8% year-on-year. At the same time, the 44 shipping companies monitored by the shipping economy platform produced main business income of 3.09 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 0.6%.

Despite the downturn in the shipping industry, the investment in Ningbo's water transport construction has not slowed down. In the first half of the year, major water transport projects such as Container Terminal Project No. 6 to No. 10 in Meishan Port Area, Zhongzhai Ore Terminal in Chuanshan Port Area (Phase II), Chuanshan No. 1 Container Terminal in Chuanshan Port Area, and General Berth Reconstruction Project in Beilun Port Area were steadily advanced.  Among them, two berths of Meishan Container Terminal Project passed the acceptance check, and one heavy box yard was completed; the pile foundation project of Chuanshan No. 1 Container Terminal was basically completed, the pier beam and the upper structure of the approach bridge were under construction; the general berth reconstruction project of Beilun Port Area began the pile foundation construction of the pier approach bridge. In addition, Ningbo Port completed a technology transformation investment of 152 million yuan in the first half of the year.

Today's design is for tomorrow's investment", the water transport project is accelerating in the early stage. Since 2019, the preliminary design of the multi-purpose renovation of the Formosa Plastic Terminal in Beilun Port Area and the preliminary design of the expansion project of the Qingzhi Chemical Phase I project have been approved. The preliminary design of the Ningbo Liwan Polyester Chemical Terminal Reconstruction Project in Daxie Port has been approved. Construction of these projects can start in the second half of the year.

In terms of waterway freight transportation, there is an obvious trend of large-scale ships. At present, Ningbo has a total of 618 ships operating, with a water transport capacity of 10.2532 million DWT; the average tonnage of cargo ships is 17894 DWT, an increase of 1598 DWT. Among them, there are 240 ships of 10,000-ton class, with a total capacity of 944.61 million DWT, accounting for 92.13% of the total capacity of Ningbo Water Transport.

“Next, we will actively guide the intensive and professional development of water transport enterprises, improve market share and risk resistance. At the same time, we will innovate the port organization, operation and management mode, improve the efficiency of production operations, and continue to promote dock loading, unloading, and stacking. The automation, intelligentization and standardization of the field and other aspects have contributed to Ningbo's efforts to build a model city for transportation powers," said the person in charge of the Municipal Port and Shipping Administration
