Fried dough stick seller in Ningbo gains fame for using trusted cooking oil

A man who runs a fast breakfast store in Ningbo has become popular for using first-grade soybean oil to produce fried dough sticks and replacing the oil every two days.

37-year-old Xu Yongbo, dubbed as Ningbo's 'Brother Youtiao', came into the spotlight after the story of Liu Hong'an, a fried dough stick seller in North China's Hebei province who refused to use recycled oil, was publicized.

His store has gained a reputation as the best place to eat fried dough sticks in the city of Ningbo. It's common for waiting customers to line up before his store at the intersection of Zhongshan East Road and Jicao Road in Jiangdong District.

His customers described the fried dough sticks produced by Xu as especially crunchy. Many of them detoured or came from far away to eat at Xu's store in the morning before they go to work.

"The soybean oil bought by Xu is unusual compared to other fast breakfast shop owners," said Wang Chaoyong, the manager of a cooking oil supplying company

Many of Xu's customers volunteered to serve at his store as he is admired for proving quality food in a country where food safety is frequently challenged by illegal 'gutter' oil and toxic additives.

Ningbo sees 4 child drowning cases this year

China is launching a water safety campaign before the upcoming summer holiday, after 16 students drowned in three separate incidents on 9th June. The Ministry of Education issued a notice online the next day, demanding all provinces and cities across the country undertake inspections on rivers and ponds to prevent drowning.

Statistics show that drowning was the top cause of accidental child deaths. Ningbo had seen 4 child drowning cases by the end of May this year. With the approach of summer holiday and the hot weather, drowning has become the top threat to children's safety.

According to officials of Ningbo Education Bureau, measures have been taken to cope with the drowning which frequently happens from May to September. In terms of safety education, each school in Ningbo will be ordered to issue a letter to parents, especially migrants, urging them to increase their supervision of their children during holidays and weekends. Furthermore, students should also be taught to increase their own safety awareness.

Meanwhile, schools and local governments should jointly launch water safety campaigns, setting up warnings at dangerous ponds, rivers and lakes. Moreover, the owners of ponds and lakes should take measures to prevent drowning and lifeguards should be available at any time
