WIT120 enters new era in Ningbo

The development of the digital economy has broken the spatial limitations of the distribution of resources and make the convenient services available to more people, which is especially prominent in the medical field.

In 2019, the Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Ningbo University became the first “Internet of Things hospital” in Ningbo. Currently, the project has been completed and put into use.

According to Director Shen of the Information Center of the hospital, the first phase of the Internet of Things project is built in accordance with the real demands of the patients and the hospital itself, which is also the reason to build the Internet of Things hospital.

“A hospital is a place with the great intensity of patient population, where we need to adopt the new technologies to prevent any possibility of emergencies,” said Director Shen. “In the past, at the in-patient department, some patients and nursing staff may use the high-power electrical appliances despite the regulations, and it was hard to keep it under control just with regular management and control. With the new Internet of Things project, we can now detect the abnormal use of electricity in time and then automatically cut out the power supply for the specific electrical appliances. In addition, the visualized platform of the network can give us early warnings for the aging of the electrical circuit at the hospital.”

The detailed air data can guide the hospital to create better indoor air conditions for patients. For example, when the carbon dioxide level, the temperature or humidity, or other air indexes reach a certain degree, the make-up air system will be open automatically or the dehumidification function will be put into use, thus it can make the patients more comfortable and effectively reduce the burden of the patients with respiratory diseases or cardiovascular diseases.

According to Director Shen, when the quantitative data are uploaded, the hospital can analyze the data and even create better meteorological conditions for patients. “For example, the best season for operations is the autumn as the temperature is proper and there is less risks for post-operation infection, so the patients have better chances for quick recovery. However, some patients have to receive early operations because of the seriousness of diseases. With the quantitative data, we can create a better treating environment for the interest of the patients.”

While the Internet of Things reform of the real hospitals brings more convenience to the patients, the “cloud hospital” framework makes it possible to see a doctor without going to the hospital. By the end of 2018, Ningbo had established 44 tele-medical service centers, 273 cloud clinics, with 300,000 registered patients. They had conducted over 2,500 times of cloud pathology and remote ultrasound consultation, 1,920 at-door nursing services, and over 660,000 online treatment and drug delivery, saving about 2.66 million yuan for Ningbo citizens
